What Have You Done To Your 2nd Gen Tacoma Today?

So lift = drivetrain vibes? Is this specific to the lift metrics or how you go about doing it (i.e. Coilovers/AAL vs. Spacers)? I've done a lot of reading on this forum about 2nd Gen lifts and the associated vibes but it's starting to seem like a foregone conclusion as opposed to just a sometime-y kinda thing.

Question for peeps with retros... adjusting them. Hard? Easy?

What's the best way to do it? I've read to park 25 ft from a wall, 40 ft from a wall... which one?

And, when aimed at the wall, how high up should the light "cut off" line be? Make sense?!

I put my truck right up against a level underground garage wall (1/2 inch from the bumper). I marked the step downs with tape on the wall (horizontal, vertical angle, then horizontal - Looks sort of like backwards Z). I also measured three feet out each side from the ground with a horizontal strip of tape to get the balance of the horizon. (Left of right tilt) Then measured the distance between the centers of the headlights (the little dots on the lens) which is 55 inches and the distance between the step downs (also 55 inches.). Finally I measure the distance from the base of the headlights to the ground, then subtracted 2 inches and taped those lines right below the step downs. I then backed up 25 feet within 1 inch of deviation. Right and left centered the step downs to match the tape marks, aligned the horizon to the outer tape marks and the vertical adjustment to the tape marks two inches below. If yours are already built, you may not have the ability to do the horizon tilt.

 

If you feel like coming to the beach, I'll put you up. We can knock em out at the same time.

 

DAUYM!!!!!!!!!!! Talk about technical. GEEZ! Yeah, mine are built already, it's a matter of possibly adjust the light output per say, to "raise it" if that makes sense. Meaning. The retros are built, mounted on the truck, but I think the light is aiming "down" too much as not "high" enough to light it "down the road".

Not positive but I don't think they will fit. The body is so much shorter on the 1st gen.

 

Not at all. It's just that more people bitch about things that are broken than things that work right.

 

Yeah, that's the engineer in me leaking out. So just do everything the same minus the horizon tilt.

 

So, to make sure I follow...

Measure how high the bottom of the headlight is from the ground. Subtract two inches from that, and mark that as the height on the wall (??).

Then back up 25 FT and adjust the lights up or down so that the "cut off" is at the bottom, or the top of that?

And I have to adjust both the drivers and passengers lights, correct?

Two inches below align with the top part of the tape and the top part of the light horizon.

If I recall correctly, I was at 38 inches at my light bottom. I marked 36 inches up on the wall and put the one inch thick tape top at 36, the bottom would be at 35 inches. Backed up and adjusted the horizon right at the top of the tape, right at 36 inches. For 99.9% of all cars, my light are below the rear windows, thus no shine in the car, however there are Miatas, and I light those mother}%£+S! like a Christmas tree.

 

Replaced both lower control arms and alignment. Maybe I'll be able to start doing some stuff to it soon one I get all the maintenance out the way.

 

Gotcha. And you adjusted both lights, correct? Meaning the drivers side and the passenger side. And the "screw" to adjust that is on the back of the headlight housing, right?!

I think i will be in the market to replace mine soon as well due to rust, havent looked at them closley to see how bad they are but just glancing when iger into the truck, theres visible rust. the toyota frame recall replaced them too but from my understanding, they have canceled the recall and therefore i have to get my own LCA now. Toyota is "Revising" the recall
