2005 Tacoma Pre-runner, how tough are older tacomas?

I have a 2005 Tacoma 2 wheel drive double cab with 126,000 miles. It's in excellent shape mechanically and physically. I want to know if I can expect to have to replace parts soon or if I can expect that it will continue to be problem free.

One issue lately is the shimmy that everyone has from 0-20mph but it's not very noticeable and probably not worth worrying about. For people with older high mileage 2nd gen tacomas have any other parts worn out do you have a trouble free experience mostly? I would like to drive the truck for another 5 years at least and make it to 200,000 miles with just routine maintenance (oil changes.

Thoughts?

 

There is a member here who hit 400,000 and gave it to his kid to drive. IIRC

 

You'll have to redefine what routine maintenance is. It's much more than oil changes.

There's preventative maintenance, there is wear item maintenance, and there is 'fix broke' maintenance.

Do the proper PM, replace worn bits with quality parts, and your 5 yr 200k goal should be doable.

Just don't expect it to be oil changes only.

 

I'm meaning, should I be looking out for any items? I follow the maintenance schedule provided by Toyota.

Suspension?

Joints?

Bearings?

 

Look for the service manual. It should tell you what you need to replace and at what exact mileage.

A lot of Toyota members do pretty basic maintenance like fixing what's broke and timingbelt/water pump replacements and oil changes.

 

In Tallahassee, you should be able to look forward to a *very* long and practically rust free life.

However, there is one fairly significant issue with 2005's (and 2006?) to watch out for, which is that the frame brackets for the motor mounts are not properly gusseted. These brackets can sometimes cave in to the frame. Its reparable, but not the easiest job. If your radiator fan starts hitting the shroud, this is what you need to look for.

 

I have an 05 Tacoma 4x4 Standard Transmission with 170,000 miles. The only thing I had to replace since I bought the truck was a alternator cable. It also kept throwing bearings and getting this devistating speak so I put a bearing sleeve on it. All fixed up no problems since! This is a hardy tough truck that will last forever if you maintain proper maintenance.
