I took it to the David Wilson's Toyota dealership (which is where we bought the vehicle), it's on Sahara corner with Mojave..... I left a voicemail earlier to the Service Manager, to see if he had received approval from his Regional Manager.... but haven't gotten a call back.... so my next step is to call Toyota Corporate (as many have suggested), and see what they have to say.

    I would think

so it's not just our truck... another 3rd gen brand new truck.... this is not normal....

thank God that the sunroof inside cover was closed, otherwise the glass would have fallen directly over the head, and potentially into the eyes.

    THANK YOU!!!

Well good luck with them, I've been there once and wasn't impressed. Hopefully you have better luck with them. Let us know what the outcome is

I just want to take a second to thank OP for a clear and concise thread title. I hate when people name it something like "Help! Can't believe this happened" or "how did this happen?" or something vague.

No problem, another bullet you can use when talking to Toyota Corporate, explain the safety hazard/issue.

This happened to me while I was driving my gf's 2014 Camry.

I had the windows down and sunroof open. I closed it all up and turned the a/c on when I was taking the on ramp to the interstate. So about 10 minutes later BOOM and glass comes raining down on me. I had the partition open still so glass was EVERYWHERE in the car. There was an 18 wheeler in front of me, but It was so far away, probably a quarter mile or more.

The glass was shattered outward / upward which would make me think it wasn't a rock at all.. and no evidence of a rock existed. So guess who had to buy a new sunroof? This guy. The dealerships around didn't even want to believe that something could be wrong with the car that caused it... even the dealership service manager where I worked for five years.

At least my homeboy in parts gave me a discount and it was $450 for the glass instead of $650.

    Good luck.

    EDIT: Found a pic

This happened to me a couple/few years ago in a 1999 4Runner, except the sunroof was open (read: inside the roof of the vehicle) and there wasn't anything in there that could've broken it. Heck, it had been open for a little while before it broke. Not sure why yours or mine broke, but definitely interested in the outcome! We just went to a junkyard and sourced a used one because the truck was 15-16 years old with 225k on the clock, but it's still really odd for it to break for no reason!

This is why I wouldn't buy a truck with a sunroof.

I've read about the lack of power with this new engine but as of 7,000 miles, I have yet to push the throttle to the floor, so I guess I'll just keep reading about the issue.

I blame the change in temperature exposure to the glass.

Is alot like when you put ice in hot water. You see it crack.

Maybe the the glass is really hot and when you start driving it, and have the AC on and the outside air going, you get the same effect.

The glass expands and contracts depending on the temperature. Since the glass is experiencing rapid pressure and temperature changes, you create pressure between "hot" and "cold" part of the glass.

    See Thermal Stress: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spontaneous_glass_breakage

Would car insurance cover a new sunroof if Toyota shafts you?

that was wise ass answer to a Turd genner. But speaking if the power in these trucks, if you have a sun roof, don't floor it. THe OP did and look what happened.

As I stated before, if the ACs in this truck are that good, then dam. Maybe take some power away from the AC and put it to the drive train.

It should, depending on your coverage. When this happened to me in my Nissan, the dealership and Nissan corporate would help me out. So I had to claim it under my comprehensive policy.

Toyota used to be good about fixing/repairing anything within 1 year 12,000 miles like your broken sunroof or in my case tree sap on the roof that I chipped the paint trying to get that stuff off.. The dealer actually resprayed the roof free of charge.. I would go back to the dealer and ask the service manager about Toyota's 1 year/12,000 " adjustment warranty" if I were you.

I pay like 8 dollars extra to cover glass. They have replaced my windshields on 3 different cars over the years. no deductible. So if you have glass on your insurance they should cover it.

Haha. I think what could have happened. As he was driving in his truck at 70 degrees outside. He was blasting the AC making his cab a cool 60. If he then drove past a hot pocket of air in Vegas, it must have been 100 something odd degrees. If the change in temperature that big (40 degree difference) and that fast was experienced, it may be enough to break the glass.
