My oem intake tube developed a growing split near the throttle body, so I replaced it with the AirRaid intake:
    AirRaid_f08e639a3440afe238971511f8d3af0b9585ba51.jpg
Much less than a factory replacement, but still a pain in the ass to put on! Nice to get rid of the box that blocked the coil and first injector though. Comes with a CARB sticker for us CA people.

Agree that looks a lot nicer. May I ask what made it difficult to install? This is something I may want to also do.

Like the oem unit, when this is assembled it's longer than the distance between the throttle body and the MAF housing; this requires some patient pushing and pulling on the flexible end couplings. If you are patient, it won't be as much of a pain!

If you don't mind me asking. How much was it? Or where did you get it from?

What did that metal box on the intake do anyway? I removed it completely when I put in my K&N CAI.

The box is a resonator to address noise from valve or intake pulses.

So it's basically like a sound deadener?

As phoenix ray says, it acts as a resonator to the air flow, and catches stuff from the PCV valve. I have not noticed any extra noise though.

I don't know if it's related or not, but once I put on the K&N CAI I noticed a little oil stain appear around the PCV valve assembly on the engine block. I wonder if removing it had anything to do with that.

I do like how well that cleans up the engine bay and gives you access to the coil & injectors. Could you cut down the tube to make it easier to install or is it just a battle of wills to get it on and not really a clearance issue that would make it a major pain?
