What do you mean by dry? I put a little oil in the cylinder throught the spark plug hole to see if it helped the compression & got no change. In hide sight I think I should have warmed the engine up first to get the rings to expand a little & get good oil everywhere. I am thinking about buyin a leak down tester from Harbor freight & see what happens.

At this point I could prob. swing buying a new head for it, but rebuilding the short block is not in my budget :(

if you put oil in the cylinder, then it is Wet and should have been significantly higher..?? 140+ i think. how many miles are on the engine?

186K on the odo. I am thinking that I am an idiot for not warming the engine up, it was 35 deg. for crying out loud. I put about a cap full of oil in the cylinder & it made no difference. Is a cap full enough? I don't see how it could have gotten all the way around the ring to help seal it. Also I only put the oil in the first cylinder, when it made no change I didn't bother with the rest.
LOL, I am still optamistic that it is going to be fine. We'll see.

LOL.. i just now got the pic.. funny. Seems like you could just replace the rings and be fine.. i dunno.. never worked with that engine. You added oil and there was no change??? that doesn't sound right at all.. sounds like a fun project alright! :D

I have half a mind to just leave it the hell alone & get it running the best I can like it is untill more fundage becomes avaliable. I still say that if the engine was warm I would have gotten much bettter numbers. I think I am going to repeat the test tonight & see what happens. How much oil am I supposed to be putting in the cylinder? If there is no change then that means that the rings are fine & I am loosing compression throught the valves right? I don't think it is the head gasket because the numbers are so even.

Does anyone have access to a leak down tester?

Adjust those valves and do the compression test again. With the intake off could you see if there was a bunch of crud/carbon stuck to the valves?

I think that I have one Robby, let me look in my Box tonight. Yes, I am thinking valves now too... focus on the head, and try adjusting the valves and replace the timing chain as planned. This is probably a better thread for TTORA sadly than TW..

Thanks Sam, let me know if you have one. I did find one at Harbor Freight for $40, might be a good investment. I am hoping the head is the problem, i can just buy a new one from engbldr.com with an RV cam for under $500 or possiblly have mine rebuilt. I have another thread going on yotatech.com but those guys are not so easy to get info from. They get pissed off if you ask questions & just tell you to search, search, search . I am tired of searching, isn't the point of the forum to ask questions & get ansewers?. Thanks for all the input guys.

nice idea, but I don't think so :p.

More I think about it, It would be cool just to get this one running the best I can & buy another engine & slowly rebuild it.

I spent several hours tinkering with the cream puff last night trying to get it running better & hopefully getting it warmed up & repeating the compression test. I started by removing the valve cover & adjusting all of the valves. Every valve was set too loose, some as much as .008" others where at least .003". The valve adjustment was easy! When I was putting the valve cover back on I noticed that a few vacuum lines to the EGR valve didn't seem quite right so I found a diagram & ended up re-running a few of them, I must have had a pretty bad vacuum leak. I already had a new distributor cap & rotor so I went ahead & replaced them, the old cap was badly corroded! After that I couldn't get the plug wires to stay tight on the new cap? The prevous owner had replaced the plugs & wires already & he gave me all of his recipts so I decide to go get the wires warrantied at Auto Zone. I also picked up a cheap set of spark plugs. It had a nice new set of E3's in it but I think I fouled them out turning it over :(. I am going to clean them up & reuse them later. The plug wires fit much better! I tried to start it one more time & she ran great!!!! :) Nice & smooth, no spitting or sputtering, just like a top. I was so happy that I didn't want to ruin my good mood by doing another compression test so I am saving that for today! It is still leaknig oil pretty bad, I am going to try to get the timing chain done and work on the exhaust leak this weekend.
