Hi. Talking to A co-worker today he puts full synthetic in his 99 F150 and spends about 50 bucks for the oil and filter I believe only the oil and filter. I spend about 20 bucks for the oil and filter and change at 5000 miles. One of my other co-worker said he changes his at 10,000 miles so I'm just wondering if that's what you guys do if you use synthetic does it go that long? Overall worth it? Because I guess if you can go twice as long and change the oil less I guess it may be worth it

    OME and worth every penny.
If I drove mostly hwy., I'd have no prob. going 10K on syn. The oil is good for it as long as you have a pretty tight engine. It'll help keep it tight also. Bad thing about extd. changes? You might tend to forget about it. Not check it. Kind of like coolant. I know lots of people have new vehicles 5 years and never even looked at the coolant bottle.

Course, they did that when it was regular old green Prestone and conventional oil too.

I run full synthetic in my 2nd Gen and change every 10k. My 2002 F250 uses dino oil every 5k.

If I was all of a sudden going to up and change something that had been done in that truck for the last decade and a half I woukd run full synthetic and have it tested at 5k to see if I could push to 10k in an older vehicle. That is just for peice of mind reasons. Want to make sure the oil does just fine and it doesn't burn off.

Peoples bull shit about going to synthetic after years of conventional leaking through seals and all the other BS would just have me check at 5k.

A full synthetic at 10k is just fine though.

I go to augusta once a month and actually with my truck it isn't a daily driver so most of it is hwy miles for most part. Augusta is about 170 miles one way. Go to Charleston on weekends for leisure and it's about 50 miles. I actually write everything down in my book and always check it every so often to know when I'm coming up on mileage to change my oil so in that regard I'd be good. I guess I may consider going to synthetic. Maybe just stick with the usual.

BTW changed oil the other day and as it stopped turning easy and I guess it was gasket to base, I went 3 small turns so not a full 360. I guess what I used to do was turn until I got it tight as I could go hand tight and backed off just a hair. Hopefully next time it will be easy to remove :)

Go to Blackstone Labs website if you are interested in testing your oil. The kit is free.

    The test is not.

I just dump the oil twice a year with the filter and call it done.

IMO Blackstone Labs is a large waste of money for "light vehicles" It might be one thing if you're operating a Cat D9 and the oil change is expensive.

I had my oil tested and I would say it was worth it. The presence of certain metals, compounds, elements, etc could signify any issue that you couldn't necessarily see or notice normally. It's also good for early detection of other issues like wear on certain engine components, or how much additive is still present. It gives you a good insight into your engine you wouldn't otherwise see.

2002 and still running strong. Been using Mobil 1 full syn for as long as I can remember and change it every 5-6k. No issues. No need to fall into a fear trap.

mobil 1 for 10,000 miles forever, in all my stuff

ask my 99 4runner, Mr. Sqweeks

Hey, Mr. Sqweeks, about your 256,231 mile 5VZFE...how has Mobil 1, since mile 5000, and every 10,000 afterward, been to you ?

"Well, I never been opened or touched, just plugs and timing belts on normal intervals,
and today I still produce more HP and better MPG than the first week I rolled off the lot."

If you're running synthetic you should at least be going to 7500k if not 10k minimum. Any less is just a waste. However I used to use synthetic every 5k now I use Dino and change every 5k. I prefer to change the oil more often just to get what dirt that got past the air filter out of the engine and not try to overload the oil filter. If I were to run synthetic now I would go 10k though, just use a good oil filter like the OEM Yzzd3

Appreciate all that took the time to reply. I will for now just go at 5k like normal and that way I can keep up with tire rotations easier :)

Plus not over tightening the filter like I have been should make oil changes much much easier. Not that it was that hard but just the PITA of getting the filter off now shouldn't be an issue.
