I have a manual 2004 Tacoma that won't start. Turning the key makes all the lights come on but nothing else happens. Battery reads 12.3 volts, it is about 2 years old.

There is a key fob that came with the vehicle. It has the letters SPAV on it. No buttons (like door unlock/lock) are on it. It's just a black piece of plastic. The hole that the keychain goes through broke once so I just left it at home and the vehicle did the same thing. So I taped the fob under the ignition switch and it worked fine for a couple years, until now.

I really suspect this stupid fob may be bad, I have another one at home but I'm stranded at work as of right now.

Is anyone familiar with this stupid fob/security system and know a way to bypass it?

If your key doesn't have the Toyota logo "SPAV" could be the key code that locksmiths or key machines use to identify what vehicles it would work on. Do you have the RS3000 alarm module? Don't know if it'll help but take a look at the programming manual: http://www.remotesremotes.com/v/vspfiles/photos/prog/toyota/rs3000.pdf

Here's the original Toyota manual for it: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/806718/Toyota-Vip-Rs3000.html?page=4#manual

The key has the Toyota symbol. Only the fob says SPAV. To my knowledge there is no alarm. I've had the truck for 5 years and have never heard an alarm.

Do you have electric door locks? There should be a little panel that says "TOYOTA SECURITY" on a blank switch panel that would indicate you have an RS3000 module. That panel would be the glassbreak sensor that looks like this:

Definitely not the rs3000. My fob has no buttons on it.

Some trucks have an rs3000 equipped, but doesn't come with keyless entry.

Have you tried starting it in Neutral? *shrugs*

For some reason am thinking, maybe clutch fluid level or that switch that tells the computer Clutch is depressed so the engine turns...

But not sure how often those fail...

My truck came with a 'locktronics' engine immobilizer installed under the dash. It never worked right so the dealership removed it. It was an option when ordering the truck from the dealership.

It goes on the keychain. It's not the key. This is the key.

Can't tell from the pic. Does your fob open so battery can be replaced?

I had a system just like that for my old 99, it became a pain. I would just remove, the system should be located under the dash

The SPAV fob is a key for your immobilizer. it appears like it has an aftermarket one installed. it's a little rf magnet no battery required. most of the time the sensor is just under the ignition switch so when you put your key in it wipes around it and deactivates the immobilizer. try turning the key to start/crank and wipe it around the key area. most systems have a little red led that indicates active or not. I think flash is active and no light is off

I found this under the dash, but after disconnecting it, truck wont start. I reconnected it and held the fob near the ignition and the truck started, but I want this thing gone. There are wires splicing into a wire going to the ignition switch.

Anyone familiar with how to remove this?

there should be wires cut completely and routed through the control box they need to be re connected to their original locations.
should be obvious as hell where they are.
I have taken a couple out and they are only a 30 min removal or so
