im curious if anyone had changed the coil spring with a longer one. For example going with a 16" instead of a 14" to take out some of the preload.

If you have done this have you run into any issues in doing so?

Yeah.... going to a longer spring wouldn't take out the preload, it would add more.

False. By preload he means how far down he would have to crank the coils. So it would require less preload to achieve the same lift.

So OP, yes, quote a few people do go to longer springs. You will achieve the same lift but without having to add preload. Keep in mind that the springs will be harder to get on the shock though.

Say the shock length is 13 inches (for the spring) fully extended.
Put a 14 inch spring in there and you need to preload it by 1 inch.
Put a 16 inch spring in there and you need to preload by by 3 inches.
    Last I checked, 3 > 1.

On King/Fox/Icon coilovers the "stock" spring is 13", you can go to a 14" spring but I've never seen anyone run longer than that.

It all depends on what you call preload. Cranking the collars down is how you achieve preload. People run longer springs so that they don't have to crank the coils down so far...

@4Running Daily can tell you all about this

No issues. Went from 13" to 14". Just be careful of not cranking in too much preload. Coil bind can result and that leads to breaking things.
14" on the left, 13" on the right.

Yea. I have 14" kings in there now. That's what they came with. I want to go to 700 bc I'll be putting a bumper and winch on but I want to get a bit more lift out of the front without adding a lot of preload. I still have the room but I was wondering what the hazards are.

I know more about long travel set ups, but I believe that most people run a 14" 700# spring. Not longer. Don't quote me on that though

I thought King came with 13" springs, my mistake on that one. I'm still pretty sure 14" is as long as you can go. If you're on 600# springs you could go to 650# and that will help being there will be less sag.

Kings come with 14", at least the OEM ones.

No body is making their own springs. They are all either Eibach, PAC, or Hyperco. Then painted with a logo and PN stamped on. These are all off the shelf springs.
