As most of you know I went up to a 3" lift and I am now running Firestone Destination A/T's 285/70/17 on 17x9 ATX "VICE" wheels. My mpg dropped from 315 miles per tank to about 250-255. I took a long road trip (all highway) this weekend and decided to experiment. On the way up I drove at whatever speeds I normally would (70-75mph) and got right at 265 miles (go-mart gas) before needing to fill up. On the way back I kept it between (60-65mph) and I made it the entire 318 miles without stopping for gas. Oh, the gas was Exxon regular. I was pretty impressed by the difference.

Are you using gps to count miles? If not your numbers will be wrong

Impressive. Do you think the lift or tires did more to kill the mpg?

I notice a huge difference in gallons per hour useage (instantaneous reading via my Scangauge) from 65 mph to 75 mph.

Yeah I have noticed the same thing...I drive 7 hours to see my gf and the difference in gas mileage between 75 and 70 mph is very noticeable.

Difference percent wise yes but I was talking about totals so others can compare. Different tire size will give different miles.
and actually the most efficient speed is around 55 MPH after that air friction goes quickly up. So to make best mileage one has to stay under 55MPH .

I'm completely stock and routinely get 20 MPG city & hwy combined, but make every attempt to keep the RPM's from exceeding 2K and operate at 1.5K. At 2K it pretty well limits me to max of 65 MPH.

Driving 70 to 75 MPH on Interstate causes my MPG to drop.

most different cars/trucks have differing points at where the mpgs drop off drastically. the objective of my post, and hopefully the thread, is not to point out the obvious but rather display Tacoma owner's observance of at what point our efficiency drops off.

if we are looking into the obvious then i guess our trucks get better mileage after a massive poop also LOL

How do you get to 65mph and stay at 2K?? I'm at or below 60mph at 2K, no exceptions. Kinda sucks since we have lots of road driving here. Takes forever to get anywhere at those speeds.

I do the 2K RPM's on the brief section of Interstate, as well as, 4 lanes that I have to travel daily go & coming from work.

On the 2 lanes where I encounter hills I allow the speed to drop to maintain typically 1.5 RPM's and try an coast where feasible down hills w/o breaking. This works OK in rurual roads, but not so great in stop & go city driving w/ all the signal lights and bumper to bumper traffic conditions.

My DCab is a 4.0L 6 speed manual 4x4 so we have different gearing.

Speedo on our trucks is broken :D
On stock tires it shows 5MPH faster then truck is going. So when speedo shows 65 you actually doing below 60MPH;)
