Recommend a revolver for home defense/target shooting

I have had a single barrel 410 rabbit gun since I was ten years old. Whenever I hear a bump in the night and have to go check it out I wish I had something that would do more than just piss off the intruder/sexual predator.

What do you suggest? I would prefer a revolver for reliability and something that is fairly accurate for target shooting purposes. Inexpensive ammo is a plus as well.

a ruger .357 or smith and wesson both good range guns and you can shoot .38S out of it

Ruger or S&W both are good, IMO i would buy a Semi-auto instead for a revolver, i know that revolvers are more dependable. If you get a revolver i would get .357 or a .38. Also the best home defense bullet is Speer Gold Dots. If you get a semi-auto get a S&W M&P, or a Springfield XD, or a Glock. Just food for thought.
Edit: I also forgot about Rossi, they make a sweet little 38 special i have one myself.

 

I agree with the above recomendations and would also add the Taurus Judge that shoots .45lc and .410 shotgun shells.

 

Yeah those are cool, but most stores seem to be very proud of those. It is pretty handy to have.

 

id say save the pistols for target shooting. but for home defense nothing beats a shotgun. when you have the option, bring a bigger gun.

that said, any of these other suggestions are good. cant go wrong with ruger or s&w in a .357

 

I'm of the minority that prefers Rugers to Smith and Wessons. S&W used to have better triggers. If you go check them out you will see that is no longer necessarily the case, sometimes the contrary is true. Even if S&W did have a better trigger, so what, a trigger job is cheap. You can even order lighter springs for like $10 and change them yourself. Rugers are built like tanks. They can take full house loads all day, every day. Smiths have much weaker forcing cones and can only take limited doses of full house (i.e. Buffalo Bore) loads.

I applaud you on choosing a revolver over an auto-loader and not believing everything you see in the movies. In a life and death situation, the K.I.S.S. method strongly favors the revolver. Not to mention, most people shoot revolvers much more accurately than autos.

Now for the real dose of truth. If you really want to protect your house/self/family, go buy a pump 12 gauge with a short barrel and an extended magazine. It will cost half as much as a revolver too.

 

Just to add this, also if your wife, girl-friend, any women might be shooting the gun also, the .38 would be easier to handle.

 

Yeah, they're kinda cool. I'm not really a revolver guy. My wife has a Colt .38s but we never shoot it.

Yes and no. If I'm holed up in a room waiting for the 911 response, I'd love a shotgun. But if I have to clear my house to get to my kid or wife, I want a pistol for sure. Just my $.02

Also with a 12 ga. people usually think that buck shot is best. That is false, bird shoot is better in the home because the buck can go through the wall and kill someone that you did not wont to. Watch some of the self defense shows that come on the outdoor channel. Once again just some helpful advice

valid points, totally agree with shot placement over a big bang, but in a stressful situation like a home invasion (at least for me) id be a hellova lot more accurate with a long gun. and the shot spread on an open choke will help even more. finally, 1 round of buckshot will stop just about anything

 

A revolver is the most reliable way to go. You can load it and pick it up 20 years later and most likely go boom when you pull the trigger.
If you use a semi auto I like Glock for carry and defence. You will need to do more maint. on semis as there are more parts and mechanical parts to keep up on.

Whichever you get pratice with it to build muscle memory and to get used to it. Classes are great to help you learn shooting techniques and have a plan of what you can and cannot do in the situation you are describing.

Use quality ammo and pratice with it to see how it shoots as many things vary from target ammo to defense ammo.

Pratice is the key.

 

me either, give me the Benelli, the Glock, Springfeild xd, the S&W M&P or the Rugar .45, or the Colt AR-15 for home defence..i dont like revolvers..and if you have the choice, choose .45 ACP, 357 Sig or .40 S&W
