I have a 2017 TRD OR. It's an awesome truck I think. I'm not bothered by the transmission or the lack of power. Seems to work fine for my needs. That said, I did recently start to hear a faint rear end howl. Presumably, it's the rear diff howl described many times on this forum and others. I have about 800 miles on the truck. My question for those of you who like your trucks: Do you have the rear end howl? Are you worried about it? Do you just trust that it's not damaging and if you can stand the sound, no worries? Mine is subtle and I can only identify it if I am working at it.

I'm not trying to draw out comments from those who are unhappy with their 3rd gens. I know how you feel. But, I know there are a lot of you out there who really enjoy your trucks are excited about them. How do you feel about the rear diff howl?

    Thanks everyone.

Happy with truck, have extended warranty, have oversize wheels and tires, have radio .... if rear is howling I cannot hear it. If it breaks, Toyota replaces no charge.

Get it addressed, then get the next one addressed when that one starts howling, then push for an extended (8 year) warranty, then kick back and relax knowing that you're covered for as long as you're likely to have the truck.

    --

No howling on this end, but I have a sport, and haven't seen anyone report howling with the sport's diff.

    Be careful with that.
I was told by my local dealer that larger tires or lift void all driveline warranty. Including diff.
Which to me is a fuckin cop out.
Maybe one or two reported with it, but most are for the OR.

I've seen threads where people are complaining of the howl but only one or two that talk about a damaged differential. I guess if it were a real issue we'd see a lot more failures.

I guess it will be like the squeaky leaf springs, shift flare or taco lean; an annoying characteristic but does't seem to lead to premature catastrophic failure.

That's a strange way of asking. Mine howls like many others. It's become one of the quirks of the vehicle and I don't even notice it most of the time. I'm waiting for Toyota to tackle this but I'm not giving it a lot of thought while I wait.

So far it's a great truck. No issues. I can't hear any odd noises.

I think just on here there were 4 or 5 catastrophic failures, hopefully those were just bad luck and not related to the howling.

What bobrown14 said. Plus dealer offers another 20 year 200,000 mile powertrain warranty. I'm sure its useless and I won't own it in 20 years but I like my truck.

Have 6000 miles on truck now and I don't have any howl, the transmission seems to have learned my driving as well or maybe I learned how to drive it, no gear hunting and holds 5th fine and 5th after 75 mph fine. You might need more miles on your truck to see how it breaks in.

Mine has the slight howl off and on. I can't figure out why mine comes and goes. To me it almost has to do with road and or wind conditions whether I hear it or not. I had the dealer look it over. They heard it.....noted it as normal....but they documented it for me so it is on record should anything ever happen down the line. I already have the extended warranty so I am not worried about. Truck has been bullet proof and I haven't had one issue with it in 8000 miles now on and off road. Its a Toyota I have the utmost confidence in it...haven't had a reason to start believing other wise.

These are great trucks enjoy the heck out of it....I do.

    Ditto for me.

Although I do like the idea of getting an extended warranty like others have posted. I'll see if I can angle one out at my next appointment. At the very least I want them to document it and if they say it is "normal" I want that in writing as well. I'll be cool after that and just wait for the super smart people in the internet to find the solution then jump on that bandwagon.

    What???

Oh....A dealer lifetime drivetrain warranty, not a Toyota factory warranty.

Are there lots of stipulations for them to cover it the full 200,000 miles?

I have an SR5 which has the same rear end as the Sports..... The ORs and Manual Transmission trucks have the new rear axle. I don't know if that's the issue.

I heard some whining when I changed from the stock tires to some General Grabber AT2 tires. This was expected and it wasn't much louder than regular road noise. Nothing has changed in the ~20K miles since changing the tires.

Ya not really. Some are guys are getting howling from the front diffs. Only after lifting. A bushing fixes that.

Some one should start a poll. If you have the rear end howl then choose from the following then list all the available trucks or rear ends.

    Ready go. :goingcrazy:
