If @Dannyblues broke each paragraph into its own post he may surpass some of the lifelong members on total post count...he would easily be in the thousands by now...

Thanks for that information. It never had occurred to me to double clutch into first. I hate that resistance and grinding sound so much I now only go into first at a dead or nearly dead stop. I like your method. I'm going to try it.

Don't you find the drive by wire hard to control when blipping the throttle. I'm used to mechanical linkages that respond as expected. I seem to under rev or over rev the engine on the lower gear downshifts like third to second. My wife jumps when she hears the engine suddenly roar to life then. At 2500 rpm in second on the long curvey 9% grade just down the road from my driveway I'll shift into third often then pull into neutral, blip the throttle ( I find the rev match at that point is 3500 rpm ) then drop it into second pretty smooth if I hit the throttle right but as I said with the drive by wire gas peddle it isn't an exact science for me yet. Guess I'll just have to practice. Thanks. Great post. Dannyblues

Just busting you balls. All is good friend.

But holy hell you must be able to type on your iPhone faster than a high school cheer leader setting up a gang bang...

It was challenging to learn how much pedal pressure to apply when rev matching with the 2016 because of the drive by wire. But after 25000 miles I've gotten it figured out. On most shifts at least! I did grind some gears today trying to double clutch for the fun of it.

Anyone swap to one of these bad boys ? Interested how it looks with the silver snap ring or if you had to remove it ?

Keep at it. Double clutching up makes the long shifting manual Tacoma even longer and it's not easy to double clutch upshifting with any speediness. I find up shift double clutching unnecessary so far but do it once in a while to keep my skills sharp. Maybe when towing double clutching would help but I have yet to tow either

Downshifting on the other hand though still a slow maneuver I do find helpful at times. But getting that rev up to come close to match isn't a skill I possess yet with any accuracy. You have 14,000 more miles on yours than I do so I'm comforted that even you haven't mastered it yet 100%

Before this I've only driven mostly little jap sports models with short clutch and stick throws and no drive by wire and double clutching was very fast and easy. Dannyblues
    P. S.
I also have a class 1 CDL with all the endorsements and learned how to shift many kinds of semi trannys plus float gears and double clutch. In the semi tractor trailer the clutch doesn't go down all the way. If you do you'll hit the clutch brake. You just break the clutch tension and shift. The rpm shift band on a diesel semi is very narrow and like all the manual Tacoma I've read about on this site each one has its own personality and sweet spot

I really like that shift knob but honestly I'm very comfortable with the stock knob. But that one of yours is a beauty. Plus it's so obviously a manual stickshift knob the car thieves will stay away from it. Most people can't drive a manual.

Does anyone find it awkward to throw sixth gear? I find myself doing it backhand or something like that at an awkward angle and have to put my talk drink container in the rear beverage holder or I'll knock it over when I go into sixth.

It would also feel more natural if reverse wasn't parallel with first. They should have made reverse parallel with second. You'd pull the stick BACK into reverse that way and back up ! It took some getting used to putting reverse into a forward position opposite of what feels natural. If reverse was backwards like second gear it would also make it easier to transition from first to reverse and back again if you had to rock the vehicle back and forth out of snow etc. Anyone agree? I think reverse is just geared weird... truck wants to take off like a rocket ship if you dont slip the clutch. If I towed any more than sporadic now, I can foresee some clutch work bills piling up.

That said, I got used to the gear setup from the FJ. The fact that reverse takes a bit more effort than first to get into means Im rarely hitting it. Was a problem (still is) on 5 spd toyota's with reverse in 6th position making me forget often enough to hear the tranny complain!

On the ball knob, I got something similar:

I've thrown mine into reverse a few times when I'm rushed into a gear and slam it in.
Looking good. Did you do anything to keep the boot from slipping down ? And is that the stock grommet /ring?

Thanks. Its a grommet right now, but you can download the .stl file I made (as a computer science major would say, beta version) to modify and 3-D print a better method. Ill work on it more over the summer when I get some free time. Here-- After-market MT shift knobs

Nice. And keeps the car thieves away who can't drive manual. Truck looks cherry. But your floor mat is dirty!

Reverse is such a torquey gear. I agree coming off the clutch fast will snap your neck. And I too am used to reverse being past fifth gear and down opposite side of first across the neutral bar. I'm used to the position in my 16 TRD now. Dannyblues

Again.... are you guys talking English? Until I had my first PC in 1998 I thought the binary system used by computers was a solar system out near Alpha Centori where Superman and his family lived. Bring it down a bit if you can Thanks. I think I'll go out and sharpen my flint arrow points. Dannyblues

I like it too but still prefer the stock shift knob. It's the second vehicle I guess I've owned with this OEM style knob and that last one I drove for 11 years. I guess I'm just a creature of habit. I absolutely hated the Tacoma style knob when I first encountered it in 2001 on my S-ER Sentra and hated the look; like an automatic, but am used to it now. That one of yours sure indicates it's a manual. I like that and the feel of the round ball. Dannyblues
