1.5g left? Was that using a UG or Scan Gauge? I wouldn't trust those things that much

 

I'm pretty sure we can't get the gas tank level through obdii on our trucks.

 

I think Jason is right. The SG and UG can only give you an estimate of what you have based on MPG and fill up info, that you have to enter manually.

At least that's how it works on my UG

 

Yeah I saw it on Erik's UG once and the gal left was a little hokey to me

You realize pretty much everything that was every posted there is lurking in other dark corners of the interwebz and can be found with extremely little effort.

 

Ok, verdict is....fuel pump overheat/shut down due to low fuel...
Technically it wasn't out of gas but.....
They charged the battery, let it sit and the fuel pump wasn't humming...they added some gas and then waited and it worked.
For reference on the "How much gas was left" I know from where the needle was and my total miles driven...I use fuelly religiously to track my mpg and I know I had at least 20 miles of range left (at least a gallon) and they put "about" 2 gallons in it and I just filled up with 18.63 which puts me at 20 ish...I know our specs are a 21 gallon tank but I have put more than 21 gallons in several times (just a touch over and I never over fill, I stop at the click every time)...So by my math I had about a gallon left. Aside from that, though, The needle has definitely been lower in my truck and I've had no problems. http://www.fuelly.com/car/toyota/tacoma/2010/treefortrichard/185328

I try to fill up when I get below quarter of a tank. My gauge seems to update in 1/16 increments

"Fuel to cool the pump"... Try to stay over 1/4 tank if at all possible.

 

That is typically when I start looking for a gas station.

 

SHIET. Failing at that right now then.

Gotta go fill up after getting kiddo from daycare. Crazy to believe that even having time to get gas is a HUGE CHORE when you have kids.

 

I usually tank up at 1/2 tank or so. The newer vehicles to keep the pump cool, and the older ones because I don't know how accurate their gauges are

They're mechanical pumps, so I guess it technically wouldn't matter, but I'd still rather not run out.

Plus it's a leftover habit from growing up in the country before the days of 24 hour pumps. If you wanted to go someplace after 9pm, you'd better have gas in the tank!

 

I'm not saying I don't run my low because I certainly do but you probably shouldn't chance it on the highway that close. More vibration and higher volume of fuel, you could have just got a air bubble in there and it wouldn't suck in anymore fuel. That could be the reason for the pump getting SO hot too!

 

YEah...but now that my commute is 75 miles I try to sqeeeeeze that extra trip in...I guess it just means filling up more often with less gas...uuugg....Why can't we get Yaris mileage

 

Yeah, most likely, but not EVERYTHING.

My Impreza is bone dry at 1/4 tank....
