I've gotten used to 6th driving the Outback, but completely agree that R is in a bad spot. Or they should have put a better lock out on it. If I don't go from 2nd to 1st, I hit reverse often. I have even got 1st a couple times going into R.

When we got the Outback, this was an issue for me. Then if I drove the Outback too much, I would forget my Taco was a 5 speed. One would think that the gear selection or shift pattern would be pretty standard by now, but nope.

I have the same problem with my 06 as well, I'm almost at the point where I'm gonna pay to have the synchro ring replaced and swap to the motorcraft mtf mentioned previously...

I always appreciate a humble honest man. Shows great character and genuine self respect. Your shifting foul ups have been similar to mine. I sometimes struggle when leaving home to back out of the driveway to get it into reverse. The stuck naturally wants to go into first. It's much worse here in winter in northwestern Connecticut. Once at near zero this winter the clutch peddle actually stuck at the floor briefly as I went from first into second just leaving home one cold morning

I wonder what do people in cold Minnesota or Canada do in winter with manual shift tacomas? They get down to 20 below zero on the thermometer without the added wind chill. I guess they use engine and transmission heaters. That's all I can imagine. That or using a crow bar or block and tackle to get the clutch peddle to rise back up Dannyblues

    thanks.

On my 09, I had some mornings where I would push the clutch pedal in and use my foot to bring it back up a few times before putting it in gear, I learned on those days not to push is down so much, as it sucks driving down the road trying to get the clutch pedal up. Those where some cold mornings. Crazy thing is, I lived in Northern Maine (15 mins from Canada Border) and don't remember having these issues with our VWs.

Wow! As far back as 09 and I'm still having the same issue with the clutch as you did but only once this winter fortunately when it dropped to near zero overnight. You'd think like standardizing shifter patterns to all vehicles that Toyota would have resolved the clutch on the floor problem by now! Hydraulic clutch fluid is very similar to brake fluid. Thankful I don't have a similar problem with the brakes. Yeah too. I've been on a motorcycle ride up to Canada, Nova Scotia and all over Maine. It's the most beautiful of the New England states. And as I remember back thirty years ago or so the roads were well kept. It was colder there from Long Island where I rode from. Had to wear my leather jacket at night...... in August!

I'm a born New Englander myself. Born Lowell Massachusetts 1949. But for a better job we moved from a great home of our own in the country to a four story walk up into a small three room apartment when I was five. In flushing queens not far from old Shea stadium. Then to Long Island and finally back to New England at the far northern end of New Milford Connecticut these past five years after retirement. Great roads and mountain hills to drive or ride on here.

That's one reason why I bought the Tacoma. For family reasons ( grandchildren) we needed a large car - ergo the double cab. Needed a powerful enough 4x4 to get up these hills especially in winter --ergo the v6 4x4. Then we needed a part time truck for the dump and Home Depot runs etc- ergo the truck. The manual shift is just a quirk of mine. Don't like automatics.
So we bought a 2016 black Tacoma TRD sport 4x4 V6 manual shift double cab with upgraded navigation and etune system, towing package, black side running board step, mudflats, 17 inch alloy charcoal / aluminum wheels, wheel locks, OEM cargo bed mat and an aftermarket roll up supported black vinyl cargo cover. Suits all our needs except great mpg. ( I have a garaged 87 Chevy Nova hatchback that's all Toyota mechanical including the 1.6 four cylinder engine and three speed auto transmission that gets 36 mpg. It also keeps the mileage lower on the Tacoma for a better trade deal in three years or less. ).

Again I appreciated the reply and description of your 09 clutch peddle issue. Dannyblues

Teaching my wife to drive a five speed manual in a very very fast Nissan S-ER 2.0 liter slightly modified. The car left the ground at redline in first and flew almost three feet in the air after hitting a curb near the doctors office building one Sunday afternoon. We were pinned inside. Had to have car pulled out. Destroyed! She will NEVER drive my Tacoma or any other manual shift again and I close my eyes when I'm with her in our 87 Chevy Nova 1.6 s-l-ow automatic tranny hatchback. We don't have airbags but I wear a parachute nowadays. Dannyblues

My Wife refuses to drive my truck because the speed shifter on it makes reverse pretty hard (for her) to get to. She literally needs both hands and a hard tug to get it in, I'm just used to swinging it over and up. Never have any issues with accidental reverse or 1st gear lol.

    Again, it WONT MATTER
It is no different than shifting.. if you are worried about your throw out bearing.. Don't use the clutch then....
It is NO DIFFERENT than taking off at a stop light.
Again if you are worried about the throw out bearing--double clutching is worse for it than shifting normally because now the throw out bearing is engaged twice in order to push the clutch in for the second time.

Not so hot. But for her age you'd never believe it. Still looks great in a bikini at 60 and not even one grey hair. Second marriage. I went for best friend and life companion this time. Married 9 years. First one was hot

You never really know your wife until you are seated across the table from her and her attorney
