Lee @fajitas21 I am trying to take my daughters Senior pictures myself. I have a Cannon EOS Rebel T4i with two lenses close and far. Any advise on what settings to use would be greatly appreciated. We will be in H-Town on Saturday at the Graffiti wall for sure. The rest of the locations are just whatever. She wants one by some railroad tracks and rustic style backdrops. Thanks in advance.

@Overkill07 Hmm, hard to answer without more detail on your level of experience on the camera, so here goes, and ask for any clarification and I'll be more than happy to answer. I love cameras as much as most of you guys love wheelin :)

Without knowing the specs of your lenses, I'm going to say use the telescope lens (far) but get close to subject. By being zoomed way in (larger number in MM), but simultaneously being close to subject, the background will blur more readily.

Also, if you want more blur of the background, move subject away from background, zoom in more, and physically get closer with camera to subject. Here's what I mean.

Camera --------- Subject -- Background = This will produce a very in focus subject and background, if that's your goal. That will likely work well for the brick wall stuff.
Camera --- Subject -----------Background = This will produce an in focus subject, but the background will begin to blur. The more distance between Subject and Background, and less distance between Camera and Subject will increase this effect.

*If you're familiar with Aperture, and using Aperture priority on your camera, set it at the smallest number it will go. I'm guessing 4.5 on a lens like you described, but lower is better if it does lower.*

If you want everything in focus, zoom out, or increase Aperture to like f/8.0 or something. Lower focal lengths (lower number in MM) will show more of the scene, but also more of the scene will be in focus. It's a combination effect.

If it's a bad time of day, such as anytime when the sun is overhead, bring a flash, use it in broad daylight. People never realize that one of the very best uses of a flash is in daylight because the sun overhead will create a shadow under your eyes, across your face, etc. The flash will remove those shadows and make your pictures come out much better. I have a flash you can borrow if you need one.

If you are around this area I know of a cool rail yard area in Orange I've done a couple shoots before and know of a few rustic places if you guys want to roam around a little and find something cool. I don't want to step on your toes, but if you, and she's comfortable with it, I'll be happy to spend some time with you guys and take some photos. Just to be clear. I'm not for hire. I offer because I love doing it and it's fun to me. You are not putting me out or bothering me, because I wouldn't even offer my help unless I consider you guys worth wasting time on :)

I've known quite a few people who took good pictures but didn't understand the settings. Inversely, I know the settings but am still learning to take good pictures after all these years.

Then I see people who have both art and science mastered and it's something I certainly hope to achieve one day.

I think I am going to buy a homelink mirror w temp so I can go to an overhead console to house my cb and switchpro. Let me make sure he is ok waiting if I go ahead and paypal him today. He says he lives on the west side of town. Is that doable when you go?
