Man oh man. Id like to say the Oilers played like shit, but the ducks just played a good game.

Half the time the commentators only say his name. "McDavid!". Mcdavid what? The only time they say anything else is. "McDavid! On a break away"
Just adding hype. His penalty resulted in a game dynamic change. After that it was all ducks.

I think if Girgensons doesn't intercept the pass its probably a good hit. But because the pass never gets there its clearly interference on a player who didn't touch the puck. While I think Guentzel needs to keep his head up, the responsibility still lies with Ristolainen to avoid the hit when the puck doesn't arrive. I dont think there was any malice in the hit other than Rasmus trying to make a big open ice hit that unfortunately went wrong. I didn't think it was worthy of a suspension, but clearly player safety thinks otherwise. I think that is primarily because Guentzel ended up concussed.

 

That's a grey area. It's a penalty for sure but it's hard to suspend someone like that when he didn't mean to do what he did. If he didn't stop the pass thats a clean hit. Also he can't really keep his head up when he doesn't touch the puck. Just a bad play all around.

 

I wonder how long it is before we see open ice hits leave the game much like fighting has. I mean there are still fights but maybe a 1/10 of the amount there were a couple of decades ago. Seems like open ice hits may start to fall off even more and follow the same trend.

 

Agree. I don't like the hit but I can't totally fault Risto either. But tough to play the what-ifs. Who knows what happens if that puck comes through clean. The timing of everything would be way different than how it turned out.

 

I think the amount of fights in the game is okay right now. However, I don't normally watch games not involving Pacific teams and know Anaheim has been one of the more heavy handed teams in recent years.

Fights have been falling off for a few years even in recent times:



In the 1970's and 1980's fights were above 1.0 per game. I don't know if anyone tracks open ice hits but with how they are penalized based on injury, and they frequently cause injury, I wonder if they will follow the same trend.
