ok, this is probably gonna be a stupid question, but I can literally spend hours looking at measurements of different rear shocks and not come up with anything concrete.

what, if any, are the disadvantages of having a rear shock that is able to extend further than your rear setup?

in my case, I currently have Dakar's and Icon 56503's (14.22" coll /23.25" ext). I believe I measured my shock correctly and on level ground, the shock measures around 21.25". also, if I measured correctly, I have like 4" of uptravel (5" from frame to top of bumpstop mount, then minus 1" or so for the compressed wheeler's bumpstop). I basically referenced Crom's thread where he did a bunch of measurements to fit the Bilstein B110's.

I also have a set of B110's, and given these numbers, it seems like the shock shouldn't bottom out, but now the question is if it's ok that the extended length is 27"? if I install the B110's, I'd get longer brake lines, so that can be eliminated from the issue.

    thanks!

I guess I'm wondering if the B110's would be too much (if that's a thing), or if something like the or the would be better?

don't see it as a problem. I have the b110's and while I make use of the extended length, I limit my up-travel.

As long as the shocks you have cover your flex, I think the only real difference will be ride comfort between the brands

i think its a good idea to have your leaf pack limiting the droop, as its safer than the shock itself.

Leaf pack will only limit droop in a static situation. Like when your truck is jacked up. If you hit a bump hard, or jump it, or 3 wheel it, you get leaf pack separation and max out your shock anyway. I'll probably strap my rear when I go with a shackle flip.

Do you have a link to the straps you plan to install, or do you plan to fabricate something custom?

Reason I ask is because I also have concerns with my shocks being the limiting factor with my AllPro Standard spring leaf packs. Someone mentioned straps, but wasn't sure which ones would be applicable.

Current rear suspension: Bilstein 5160 that came with my TX Baja, AllPro Standards, AllPro U-bolt flip kit, Timbren bumpstops, AllPro extended brake lines. Bilsteins are said to have approx. 10" of travel; compressed 13.8" and extended 23.2".

Wasn't trying to scare you. Most people are fine without limit straps. The shocks usually have rubber inside to lessen the shock of fully extending. Just something if you are desert racing or jumping all the time. Most of the time, adding straps will need welding on tabs.

Since my shock specs are approx 9.4" of travel; would you recommend 9" or 10" straps, or am I way off?

It depends. I don't know how you plan on doing it. You gotta just look at your truck and see where you can put two mounting points and measure the distance.

or un-hook your shocks and flex your truck, measure the distance of the shock mount extended and compressed, that will tell you what you need.

Doesn't really matter how much shock travel you have. Straps can be 3 feet long if you have a high enough point to mount one end. As long as the strap fully extends and stops the axle before the shock does.

I think the first thing you should do is get shocks that match your leaf pack better.
