11pm meeting. Layoffs for most contractors, salaried and engineering.
Those close to returement were urged to retire.
Effective for all of our power/energy plants.

 

Wow. We went through that on our last buyout. Luckily in my section we are already at minimum manning so there was some safety there. Safe in your area?

 

Several salaried team leaders and engineers have been notified here. My boss who is from schenectidy said he lost a few friends up there.

 

8 hours 22 minutes to go.

 

Company overall in slow growth or just a "cost savings" reduction? Ours was to reduce costs to make the sale/merger/buyout (whatever they settled on calling it ) more friendly on paper.

Yeah. Took a nap earlier so not too sleepy but my allergies are kicking my ass. May do me some good to get some more sleep.

 

We simply just didnt meet our numbers in power generation this quarter.
So, I guess its just an offset.
We are also the engineering capital of the world. The building sits right behind ours on campus. Alot of thise folks are indian.
Usually, this is the way it works anyway.
Engineering, salaried, temps then on to hourly. We were assured no temps or hourly would be affected.
Then I ran across this online that says "most temps".

Iv'e never ran into a single temp here that was worth a shit. They are mostly in the deburr area. All lazy, take super long breaks, stand around and chit chat. They fired a few recently for fighting.
These type are just here for a paycheck, nothing more.

 

That helps. I'm hoping for some rain here soon as the pollen is getting out of hand. It's yellow/green vehicle season here.

Temps seems a good place to start though... hence, Temp... but it's never fun to go through. and when it does go down, you can usually tell who wants to stay around and those who don't care.

No. G.e. gas turbines. 18 yrs this aug. Machinist.

 

So companies aren't buying enough turbines then? Or are we talking aircraft turbines?

 

Turbines that power cities. I dont think weve sold one in the U.S. in over a year.

 

So the power plants are running what they have and not replacing or building new plants? Going nuclear?

 

Fuck this ! I hate this schedule.

 

Yeah that was one of our reasons for going on strike a couple years back, the fact that they had something like 70% contractors to 30% maintenance employees for day to day work. I mean, I get it, its cheaper to have guys on call for work load than have a boat load of employees sitting around. But the union decided they wanted to make that a fighting point. Then at the table the removed that completely and the argument completely dropped. What do I still see as an operator? Fuckin shit broken/breaking for 6+ months as it sits in an online queue and gets downgraded because "its not that bad". Till it is.

Example, minor steam leak off of a teeny little valve, put in a notification (I was new and had been told not to touch ANYTHING maintenance related or the company and union would go crazy, even though I come from a mechanic background), 6 months later its a fuckin steam lance and they have to remove the entire WELDED in valve to fix it. now I just fix little shit like that that I can since I know the planners wont touch it until it gets worse.

 

You get used to it. I have after 22 years.
