I believe my 2012 2.7 4x4 might do the same. At first I thought my truck had the same beer shakes I have.

It sounds to me like the idle is simply too low. Dropping to 500rpm would certainly cause engine shake, which you would hear and see at the shift lever. I'm betting the dealer will make an adjustment or replace a sensor (O2?).

Pretty astonishing that after more than a decade of producing the same MT tacos, they still rattle like a damn dryer full of bolts. Bell housing or whatever, my '10 sounds like it's coming apart when idling with the clutch pedal not depressed, and it's sounded like that since it was brand new. Clutch pedal also squeals like a choked rat.

The good news is this does not seem to have any real mechanical downside. Mine has 160k on it now; still on the original clutch and it shifts through the gears like its new (redline synthetic fluid changes every 30k).

I think the shaking is normal vehicle ops. Mine is just like that. If you are coming from a Honda, which IMO has the best manual transmission available on any production car, bar none, not even BMW, this truck is going to feel like you're operating a cement mixer. That's just how these things drive. This setup is downright primitive from an automotive standpoint - with the 4 banger it's been virtually unchanged in decades.

So more good news, it will run forever with no maintenance. When you are only producing 156hp (or whatever the exact # is these days) from 2.7l of displacement, it ought to freakin last forever. This is one lazy-assed engine, designed for nothing else but reliability. So, you got that going for you, and hopefully you knew the trade-offs going in.

The idle thing looks like an issue, probably minor. Fix under warranty.

I'd really like to hear what they tell you about the rattling, I've read all about it here but I've never taken mine to the dealer. Keep us posted, please.

The ticking/grinding noise when I am in neutral and off the clutch is actually getting worse. The low idle is also getting worse, when it drops now something in the engine kicks in almost like A/C compressor and the idle rises. It is going in tomorrow at 7:30am. My bet is on a bad throw out bearing and a vacuum leak.

hahahaha oh man I feel bad for the service advisor that's going to have to deal with this.

He'll tell you its normal, you'll think he's brushing you off. But honestly from what I've seen in the video it is in fact all normal. The shifter moves around like that because its a direct top mount shifter, you'll see the same exact thing on jeep wranglers, the movement is actually a good thing for offroarding, if there wasn't play you'd end up not being able to get in gear while you're flexing offroad.

The sound it makes when your clutch is out and youre in neutral.... that's your throwout bearing. Maybe its louder than you're used to but you can hear that in everything from a Honda to a BMW, its just the physics of a throwout bearing.

I think you just had high expectations for a 2017 vehicle, but the 4cyl 3rd gen is using a powertrain developed like 2 decades ago, its not smooth or graceful, its not modern, but it IS rugged as shit and will last forever. I hope you understood what you were buying before you bought it :/

Edit: you did say its getting worse so obviously get it checked out, but from the first video you posted I didn't even see anything wrong. Maybe make a 2nd video if it gets really bad.

I never had a throw out bearing make a rattling sound in any of my cars or trucks from Ford Rangers, VW TDIs and old school DSMs unless they were going bad.

I know what I bought into. Not looking for the perfect truck just a cheap commuter in all weather conditions and hauling stuff in the bed on the weekends that won't leave me stranded. A shitty TOB will leave me stranded and most likely ruin the clutch and flywheel if it disintegrates. Since this truck has only 100+ miles on it better safe then sorry. I called Toyota, got a case#, called the dealer and they have to at least take it in and check it out. It is a very obvious noise when you are in the truck. You can hear it over the radio especially on a incline sitting at a traffic light. The low idle shakes the whole truck too. If they send me home and the TOB granades in 3k miles I have proof so they can't blame it on me.

put me in the normal camp. Perhaps you have a bit of buyer's remorse and picking apart the truck?

Nah I am actually very happy with it so far. If it is normal so be it and I will enjoy it either way.

I was greeted by a long service line. I was told to get in line. Never got a chance to show the "special tech" I was assigned to diagnose my problems. They made me sign a paper that stated my concerns with one line descriptions. I was told they will call me when it is all ready for me. I kinda chuckled and said "oh really that easy?". I got no smile, no response, nothing. Gave me a 2017 Camry rental which they tried to make me pay for.

They won't be able to reproduce any of the problems I complained about unless the truck is fully warmed up. I expect a call from them that it is ready by lunch time with a nothing is wrong explanation.

So far pretty disappointed in the process and my dealership.

My truck consistently idles at about 640 when warm, and I never noticed it dip below that before. I'll take notice when I go out tonight.

Shifter wobble is completely normal, as is the noise you are getting in neutral with the clutch out. All 7 of my manuals have done this to varying degrees.

The banging you get from shifting worries me. It could just be from pushing the clutch in quickly while you have high load on the gear like you did. Like others have said, keep on the gas a bit to keep the revs up ... and don't slam the clutch in.

It took me a while to master this truck, and I've been driving nothing but manuals since 2001. It's a clumsy truck, but after 20k miles I find it very smooth now. It could just be that I'm used to it, but who knows.

I've owned many manuals - pre-taco Toyota pickup, G1 and G2 pickups, Hondas, a Chevy, 3 different BMWs, non-pickup Toyota sedans. Eons ago my family had a manual transmission Cressida - imagine that! My G2 is the only one of all these to have such a loud rattle. There's also some sort of clanking in the linkage, and it squeaks like a choked rat as I mentioned before.

Granted none of this has caused any sort of mechanical problems, just annoying. I don't mind because this truck is simple as anything on the road today, reliable as hell, and I doubt there is any other production vehicle that is cheaper to own and maintain than a 4 cyl manual transmission taco. So, I don't care all that much, but it would be cool to know what the stinkin' problem is. And still, for God's sake Toyota is supposed to be the benchmark of quality. I can see this being an issue for a model year or 2 before someone gets around to fixing it, but this is going on 12 years plus. Through a G2 "refresh", and now what is allegedly an "all new" G3.

Dealer update. Bad input shaft bearing. They need to drop the tranny. Truck will be there for a week or two. I don't feel comfortable with that. I don't want them learning on my truck. I have to call Toyota and see what my options are at this point. There is too much that can go wrong at this point especially for a brand new truck. It was obviously a defective part from the manufacturer. Unfortunately you have to take off half the truck and transmission to fix it. Not cool!

What would you do in my shoes?
