You don't really have much choice - it will need to be fixed. Since it's a warranty repair it will need to go through the dealer. So find a dealer you think you can trust and let them have it. Is there some reason you don't want to have it serviced by the dealer you bought it from?

Not a bad thing to ask for even if they don't offer.

Wow. Well, if it were me I would thank them for their excellent service, then politely ask, as a long time loyal Toyota customer, for a complementary extended warranty at least covering the drivetrain. Ask to talk to the service manager, not a front liner. Be friendly but insistent.

Then drive the thing as long as you want and forget about it.

First thank them for finding out what the issue is and willingness to fix it without giving you the run around. Then express your concerns about this mechanical issue and seek the best extended warranty they offer. I know that would calm my fears.
Then drive the truck for all its worth.

Would you guys want a brand new truck being disassembled and put back together in the first year that trim was available? I bet they don't even have the appropriate service manuals for it yet. It's a guinea pig.

It will be there for a month as they order a bearing from Japan. By the time I get it the excitement will be gone. Just bitter. Lost it's fun.

First year?? This design, and probably most of the parts, are decades old. Don't sweat it.

It is a big inconvenience though; they should give you a loaner for the entire duration.

A lot of assumptions about your dealer. You truck has a defective part, now they will fix it. Don't see the problem. Stuff happens in life, just get it fixed and move on.

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
Tell them to give you a transmission out of a truck on the lot and get you on the road. They can fix that one when the parts come and slap it in the donor. it

Yes, they can't sell the donor while it's sitting, but they don't have to keep you in a loaner for weeks either. And you have an uber low mile truck, so a 'new' trans for you is not really a gimmie; it's getting what you should have had from the get go.

Also, you could tell them with a 'new' trans you won't ask for an extended warranty; with yours being repaired you will.

PS, while the bearing may (or may not) resolve part of what you feel are issues, I'm not confident it will correct them all.............

You could always check the lemon law for your state as l believe 30 days in the shop for an issue might qualify it.

Unfortunately in the real world, pulling a transmission from a new truck on the lot is not going to happen.

Back in that late 80s early 90s my buddy had a Pontiac LeMans, which was Korean and they were having some kind of strike or something and they did actually pull parts off a new one in the lot to fix his.

Nope, and asking for something ridiculous like this is bad advice for maintaining a good relationship with the dealer. Availability of parts is not something the dealer can control.

But that is an awfully long fooking time to wait for a stinkin part like this. This isn't a Lamborghini..

I get that you're upset, but this a bit dramatic. Let them fix it, ask for a warranty and go enjoy your truck.

I owned a Honda CRX back in the late 80's. Two months after I drove it off the lot someone rear-ended it and turned it into an accordion. It was about even to repair or total it, I chose repair hoping I could get more when I sold it because I knew it was going to be a piece of junk when it was done. The repair turned out great. I ended up keeping it for 230K miles. It never rusted, never rattled or squeaked, and I never got less then 50k miles per set of tires.

This is a bearing, it is an easy fix - your truck will be fine.

Ok hold up. It sucks but a lot of us have had major repairs done on our trucks already. Here's what you need to do.

    1. You need to call corporate. It's a 1800 number on the toyota website, under customer care or something. It's the one you use to make complaints. Calmly and politely say that you are really dissapointed in this, that a major repair has to be done this early on your truck. Remind them that you paid top dollar, avoiding heavy discounts from other manufacturers because Toyota's whole marketing scheme is reliability. Ask if there is anything they can do about this to ease your concern. Tell them you realize professionals are working on your truck but that you put a lot of miles on it each year and would feel a lot more comfortable with a complimentary extended warranty since, as you said it, major components have to be torn down and you are unsure of how major repairs are handled like that at the dealership.

    2. I was in the same camp, I had Ford destroy a pinion bearing on my last truck and refuse to fix it saying i couldn't prove it was them, even though I turned around and brought it straight back. Toyota had to replace my differential already and they gave me a complimentary extended warranty to ease my concerns. The techs that worked on it, it wasn't a learning experience for them. I went back, I talked to them, I talked to the shop foreman. These guys knew their shit and had been around a long time. They don't tend to give a major job like that to the new kid that just got there. The new differential had the same problem as the old one but that was not any one in the service departments fault.

Also remember, in a production run there will always be bad parts, but that is what the warranty is for. I dont think the issue you have is common, but it does suck. You just need to make sure they take care of you 100% and then some. You paid a lot of money for the "toyota reliability" and have the potential to be a long term customer. Remind them of that.

Sucks, you got like 3 options.
    1-let then fix it
2-drive it like it is until it needs to be repaired because it won't go anymore
    3-sell it

I got my truck in November, it spent the month of February in the shop due to an accident. It freaking sucks, but crap happens, just don't step in it.

If it was me, please fix my truck, give me a taco loaner until it's fixed and an the best warranty you offer.

I wouldn't worry about them replacing the bearing. The 5-speeds are low tech almost the same as the early 90's trans. You could rebuild it in your garage in a weekend. Look under your truck it is very easy to pull the trans, not an ideal situation, but it happens. I've had my fair share of issues, I might be getting my hood replaced because my windshield squirters can't be realigned .

You can try asking for the extended warranty.
