    What all do you two think you are going to upgrade on? Once you strengthen the pivot points your poles WILL fail. You are going from a dual supported static span (the poles to the ground and guy wires are holding the awning in place during wind) to a single supporting lever arm that has to dynamicly suport the weight of its self, and now wind load moving it up and down, and possibly rain. Not to mention you need to make the mounting brackets strong for that type of load too.

    It will Be fun to watch this unfold. :popcorn:

    The awning on my tent trailer was self supporting. It had no poles or lines to the ground.

    Didn't feel like painting and I wanted to get a little garage time in this evening.

    Awning installed!

    I didn't really expect it to come with mounts since it seems like they are always custom, but it did. And even better, they ended up working out great!

    They are a dense plastic and have a metal L bracket inside that braces the bottom mount to the first vertical mount bolt. The mount has little protrusions that go into the track of the awning so your bolt is keeping it from falling off or sliding back/forward and does not have to also hold the weight of the awning up. A nice design.

    But since the awning sits flush with the vertical face, the side rail of the prinsu was in the way. I notched out the bottom of the mounts to go over that little lip, and now its sandwiched between the awning and the mount. Probably wont help a crazy amount on the stability, but it shouldnt hurt. The mount is pretty thick in that area so I wasn't worried about taking out 1/8" Not to mention the metal brace.

    I didn't realize that the awning is made by Oztent (says it on the decal on the side). But I opened it up while it was lying on the ground and the fabric seems pretty hefty. Not like its crazy heavy, but I wont worry about ripping it. The hinge area is not the greatest design IMO, but it is more stout than I expected when I saw pictures of it before. Looking at it, I think I may have a relatively simple way to brace it and make it self supporting.

    The support poles look like quality as well and they include a whole bag of tie downs and stuff that I havent even looked through.

    The one I got.. just for the passenger side.

    The discussion is in the expedition something or other thread. Someone posted up that they weren't thrilled with the quality but didn't give many details.

    Hey... If you're going to have shelter, need to have enough to function! Since the sun is rarely straight overhead, bigger IS better. :D

    If it's not crazy windy tomorrow I'll try and get some pictures in BV with it deployed.

    I don't think it'll move enough for any issues. I'm not much of a rock crawler, never noticed any issue when i had the last one on there.

    No modifications yet... But wanted to see how it did when open.

    I've got an idea for an easy support system for it. Probably give it a try and see how it works.

    It has zippers all around it on the edge so you could add a wall or completely enclose it.

    Back on the damn panel.

    It's a little cool in the garage but I'm giving it a little extra time to flash. Hopefully it works.

    Getting the adhesive off there sucked, the wrap came off easy, and it was better stuck to the non adhesive areas.

    The other night i also finished up putting the HIDs in the Hellas

    The wiring comes straight out the back of the HID bulb so you have to make a hole for it.

    The clamp that holds the original bulb down won't work with these since it goes across the center. I bent the tabs down and it holds it pretty secure. Now for a little hi temp gasket goo to seal it up.

    So they are ready to be mounted.

    Baby steps. Not sure when I'll get around to it.
