Oil filter help!?!

Howdy,

First time posting... long time tacoma owner. This site seems pretty good so far...

So I just bought a 2007 tacoma regular cab 4x4 with the 2.7l 4 cyl.

I owned a 2 wheel drive 1996 tacoma for its entire life and decided it was time to get the 4x4...

So far I love the truck, but I recently went to change the oil and have been encountering some problems...

So I go to NApa auto parts and they sell me the oil filter that their book says will work. Right off the bat I realize its the exact same filter for my previous tacoma... odd but its possible.

I get home, remove the oil and filter and go to check the new filter against the old filter oring. Hmmmmn, they don't seem to be the same, the one I removed that is the toyota brand looks bigger.

Concerned, I drive to Kragen auto and reference the fram filter.... also the same filter for both the 1996 and 2007... okay, maybe I was just trippin and the filter is the same. Guy at the store says to check it again and if its close to give it a try and it should work...

I think he is an idiot, but decide to try it. So I get home and convince myself that the Napa filter is close enough, and hey, its the one the book says is right so I install it...

No leaks so far but I still need to give it a test drive... Drive to work and let the truck sit all day... before leaving work I check it again , and what do you know, its leaking.... not a lot, but its leaking.

Anyways, my QUESTION is: has anyone else had this problem? Is there an aftermarket filter even available?

How can Napa, and Fram have the wrong part listed?

I've been changing my oil for over ten years... so am I doing something wrong?

You should know that when I bought the truck I had it undercoated by Rhino liners with ther spray on stuff...

Could the rhino liner have casued any problem when installing the new filter? The original filter I removed was SUPER tight and hard to remove, but that could have been because the numnuts at the toyota dealership over tightened it... or did the rhino liner make it stick???? Or just the wrong filter???

Where do I get the right filter?!?

owyn. i dont use FRAM. i do not know if the negative comments flying about on the internet are true..but i wont take the chance.

i bet the stock filter from a toyota dealership isnt much more $$ than the FRAM.

 

First, I think you made the mistake of getting the part number from the guys at the desk. Second, every time I get a filter, they will have a parts book next to the filters. And I use that, instead of the high school kids at the desk. I also triple check the parts numbers just to make sure, etc, etc.

Also, don't use Fram filters at all, they ARE the worse filters you could get. Use something else, or go to the dealership and they will get the right filter for you.
Also, you may want to try to go somewhere else if possible, Autozone is usually a good place to go. Hope that helps.

 

ya I know asking those guys was a mistake... so I looked it up myself in the book... and they were right.

Its pretty odd that the napa brand, and the fram brand are both the wrong size... I guess Ill go get one from toyota from now on...

Why would it be a problem? I don't understand. Did they spray Rhino lining on the old filter? The only problem I would see in that is if the new oil filter has a bigger diameter. And the rubber seal on the filter goes against the Rhino lining, and not the flat metal surface. If this is the case, then getting the right sized diameter, like the old one, it should be fine.

 

Just use OEM. A good substitute that I use is Purolator PureOne.

with tools like this on this website its no wonder why the quetion I asked was never responded to. I had the book right there and was reading the same part number the clerk was. Seems unlikely that two stores and tow diff filters would both be incorrect but who am I to argue.

Was the NAPA part #1348? It may be smaller than the oem, but it doesn't matter. The gasket should be close to the original filter gasket, but as long as it seats against the housing it will be ok. The only reasons for leakage would be:1) The old gasket did not come off with the old filter and you have a double gasket. 2) You did not lubricate the seal before you installed the new filter. 3) The new gasket has a cut which sometimes happens during packaging or shipping. 4) The undercoating is on the filter housing and needs to be removed with a scuff pad.

When you look up after market filters, every Tacoma uses the same one. I happen to sell AC Delco at my Chevy dealer and every Tacoma engine uses a PF53 for example. Toyota has more than one filter and I don't know why. The difference in size is not enough to matter, but there may be a difference in the back flow valve or the internal filter media. Again, I don't know why there would be, but they must have a reason.

Scroll down the cross reference and see how many Toyota part numbers cross over to the Wix part number 51348. Why do they have so many? I count 17 Toyota numbers.

TG = tough guard
XG = extra guard

NAPA should cross reference with these
FRAM 3614 = NAPA 1269 -or-1348-or-1374

FRAM 3600 =

Nothing wrong with FRAM FILTERS

 

NWtacoma, I'm not sure what you are trying to do. But implying someone is stupid is not what I think we should do with members, especially a new member. You don't even know the guy, how old are you anyways, 15?

good info. i think that damned PH3614 is used on almost anything. i've seen it on Saturns and even a Briggs & Stratton 12 horse motor.

to the OP: go to your local dealer and get the OEM filter...should be around $6. you spent the money to buy a nice truck, right? don't skimp a couple bucks on the filter.

OP, I have the 2.7L engine and I use the OEM filter. I bought a case of ten of them online from these guys.
