    Clutch is disposable, remember that.

Disagree. The clutch is in not disposable. I could not live without my clutch. It is however a consumable. But, that does not mean that we should not look for ways for it to be consumed at a lower rate.

I know the clutch is a consumable item but I'm not ready to give up on this either. If the computer is so advanced compared to a 2nd gen, I wonder if something could be changed with a tuner (when one becomes available) where something could be deactivated with a switch and whatever would have pissed the computer off could then be ignored. Uncharted territory deep within uncharted territory at this point I guess.

I'm hoping that someone figure this out because I plan on pulling a TT of some sort and I hate the smell of burning clutch.

Certainly an option...but not a particularly convenient one.

Good call... Id probably have to download the 2nd gen wiring diagram to confirm that they dont have the skid control, but even following that lead on the 3rd gen, I dont see anything on there that would directly control the diff lock on the 4wd computer (could be wrong though because it does have BE, GR, and W wires feeding back to it from the skid ecu).

Orangevirus responded about my tune inquiry for the 3rd gen. I responded with the question about the 4wd system operation within the computer and if there was anything that would help with a 2wd Lo mod.

"Hello yes we are! thank you for your inquiry.

We plan our initial, limited release on our reflash tuning early summer / late spring for the 2GR KFS 3.5L Tacoma Engine

And in regards to the 4wd system and the computer when trying to achieve a 2wd Lo range function:

"We can't give out too many details yet, but once we are ready we will release details about what is possible, what we change, etc."

Now that's exciting news and could be a seriously clean solution.

Curious if anyone has made some headway into this project yet? Got some non-snow hill driving coming up, with loaded truck and/or trailer, and probably reversing will be required! I might have to see this one through myself, but as Im no electronics expert, I doubt Ill make any dent in it for a while. In the meantime, I saw the 2nd gen stuff-- super nice! https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/mod-for-2-lo-on-late-model-2nd-gen.464971/page-2

I would also like to know. This could be the most useful mod for a mt tacoma.

I would expect the modification to the wiring that was done to the older models to work fine on the newer ones as well. The front ADD operates exactly the same on the 2016+. This is just not allowing the front diff to engage and telling the ECU that it is in fact engaged.

The wiring is different, so you'll want to make sure it is done correctly, but once done properly, it will work the same as it did on the older models. The ADD wire that splits off to the skid control computer that was mentioned shouldn't cause any issues I don't think, but if it did, you can just change where you intercept that wire (between the ECU and the junction will prevent the skid control from thinking the truck is in 4WD, which is ideal, however if this is an issue, it can be intercepted between the junction and the differential actuator instead to maintain continuity to the skid control computer).

I think youre onto something. I downloaded both a 2013 wiring diagram and the 3rd gen and they appear to be wired up exactly the same with the 1 exception that the 3rd gen sends a signal to the skid control ECU. 2nd gens also have the skid control ECU, but they dont appear to have any additional signals when switching to 4wd. But as far as I can see, the other wires look to be 100% same function with the 2nd gen 2lo mod. So the only question is: how picky/integrated is the skid control computer...

Not to sound like an idiot... what is a skid control computer and do all models of 3rd gen have them? Function?

The hubs is not where the front shafts engage. It's in the diff.

In a perfect world, I'd wish for twin sticks and manual hubs myself.

    @ducktw you have options OP.
    1) Learn to get the truck in reverse and back it up in gear rather than slip the clutch the whole way, trust me it works I backed a boat uphill into my buddies driveway still using that technique and going real slow. You can brake in reverse to avoid flying back.
    2) do manual hub conversion as @jmaack and others have stated
    3) take your front driveshaft out and engage 4lo as normal. It won't do anything bad to run it that way, you'll just be stuck with 2wd until you put the shaft back in. There are 4 bolts on each end of the shaft and then you should be able to fenagle it out
May have to remove skid plates or other bs depending on your setup

Probably would temporarly remove front drive shaft.
