The clamshell as a whole seems like a cost cutting motivated design

 

It makes sense really. For IFS anyways.

 

I still think the older pickup style and the Dana style are less complicated and proven in just about every other application. The clamshell is a wee bit lighter but far more finicky and weak.

I'd love to do that. But to make an adapter for CVS and shit. I don't have the tools.

 

If you reread what was said. The reference was to putting a 2nd gen diff in frank. Too me they don't seen like a better option.

 

Sidestep if anything, someone needs to work on beefing the clamshell or making a bolt in replacement normal diff.

Yea it is. It's an 8" ring gear. For me that's an improvement. Especially for 35s. But not a huge one.

 

ARB is the beef up.

Bolt in replacment..not so easy. Still has to be offset. And unlock able from the wheels.

 

Or just keep replacing them as they break.

Really, and regear again, go to 4.88s?

 

ARB definitely makes it better, I'm not entirely convinced that the case is rigid enough to take the side loading from the gears meshing at high torque. Needs an inner pinion support like the Ford 9in.

@Digiratus, the only thing that would make the 2nd gen 8in stronger is that he would be forced to use more stout 4.88gears

 

4.56 for v8 haha

Hold up buddy.

4.88s are not stronger than 5.29s. This is a common misconception that I don't know how it got started. Zuk has an article on this on his site. He says 5.29s are stronger than 4.10s even.

It's all on the gear setup.

Knowing what I know now. Loading the side bearings a bit more is ideal. And helpful.
