I like manual stuff like windows and door locks - I'd rather run my own systems for things like stereos. KISS goes a long way. Longevity of a vehicle seems directly proportional to how simple it is to diagnose problems and fix them.

At some point old vehicles will require a lot of work and unless a collector owns them, they'll require the owner works on them so I'm glad to have a simple vehicle. Even with how basic it is, there's a lot I have to learn to know how to keep up with all the things it'll need.

FLUIDS write it down in a notebook you keep in the glovebox and follow the manual for change intervals. If there is any advice I can impart having killed my fair share of gearboxes it is this...

I came up with a pretty good system on my last truck, basically just got lucky with buying it at 100k miles and replacing the diff and trans (prerunner) at that time so it's easy to remember when to do it. I use my trip meters to A. record distance for mileage checks at the gas station and B. measure for oil change intervals. I got lucky again and bought this one with 200k miles. Nice easy numbers to remember haha!

So I really gotta get a camera or a phone or a camera phone. I came up with some brilliant locks for my truck tonneau - the part that is not a double locking job-box. The previous owner had an obviously well fabbed bed surround and ladder/headache rack which has an upturned lip of angle iron all the way around. I'm gonna put some hasp bales thru the tailgate portion and padlock the MF at least twice maybe three or even four times. fuck meth

No camera? You really do live off the grid. What are you typing on, a piece of wood that looks like a computer?

I resisted the cellphone movement so long my parents ended up buying one for me "in case of emergencies." I'm right there with ya, but these days I can learn a lot with technology so I try to make it work for me. Sounds like you do have some shady people in your area - like when I lived in Long Beach. If you didn't want something stolen, you kept it inside and even then there wasn't a guarantee.

You can get an old phone and just use it as a camera. Some Samsungs have good cameras and can just be used as a storage device for music, videos, etc. I'd probably get one before throwing money down on a new phone - I have a decent phone I use for normal every day stuff. Having a knock around one for pictures would be cool when I'm out working on the truck with oil, brake clean and the kind of stuff you don't want dripping on to a $500 phone. Brake clean doesn't mix well with some phone related materials... ask me how I know

hear ya on that phone "thang, bra." Did I really just say that? No I intentionally revolt on tech. At least the kind that appears to be dumbing down 'merica. I need to be more open to useful shit.

I've always liked the out in the open gas cans filled with gas and sugar idea. The thief can take it and have fun totaling their vehicles

Sugar mixed with water and gas to be more precise

I wasn't intentionally doing it I guess either - CA had a policy at the time (maybe they still do, but it wouldn't work for me since I make more money and travel to 2 different jobs) where a landline was $6 a month if you didn't make that much money. I was in school and working part time plus financial aid so I made less than whatever that amount was. I didn't see the point in spending more for a cell phone. I used disposable cameras for photography and one would last me about 6 months lol. These days I have a different setup, but it's bare bones for what I use it for. Kind of like my new (old) truck build :)

If a big fuck'n tire iron falls in the garage and nobody's there to hear it, does it make a sound? I spent all kinds a time wrenchin' and ponderin' and thinking I'm a genius but got no documentation.

Another good reason for a smart phone - just hit record on the audio recording app and find out the answer to this age old mystery...
