Precautions or Things you have done for your truck that you recommend to others.

I a new Tacoma owner. And so much thanks to this forum for pointing me out in the right direction for warranty, nerf bars, break-in, bed cover and tailgate security. I had no clue that the tailgate could be stolen until I read a post here yesterday and how to secure it. I just orded pop & lock today and I will pick up a hose clamp tonight. Now I am just wondering if there are other things that we need to secure or watch out for. Please list things that you have done to you truck that could be beneficial to others.

 

a locking gas cap. not bc people can steal gas, there is a screen in there that prevents that, but to keep people from putting stuff in it.

 

For security; in addition to the TG hose clamp, I have a cable lock for the spare and a metal dowel in the track of the sliding rear window. Everytime I open up the hood I am very glad I installed the hood struts.

 

Change your ATF before, or at 60K miles.

 

Enjoy it and save the mod monies for something else

i thought the transmission was "sealed" and good for like forever... when i took it toyota they told they did not change the fluid...

 

It's not good forever. Now they've lowered the recommended change interval to 60K miles. The dealership will have a letter they can show you from Toyota (although it only specifies the 2010s).

get sliders not nerf bars. i got a set of polished stainless steel westin bars and they are rusting. yes stainless is rusting. I wish i got sliders but this was my first truck and i needed away for my son to get in and didn't know about sliders.

Add some cabinet locks to the cubby covers in the bed. Allows you to store stuff that might easily get ripped off.

 

Toyota made a mistake in the 2010 owners manual regarding the transmission fluid needing to be changed at 100,000 miles...supposed to be every 60,000. They sent letters out and printed up new manuals with the corrected mileage for the AFT change intervals...you should check into this. My 2007 owners manual says 60,000 miles.

Keep your cargo tiedowns inside your cab when not in use.

Many owners have had them stolen when left in the bed rails.

 

If it was sealed, how did the fluid get in there in the first place?

They probably didn't change the fluid. And "they" aren't going to do something else when the time comes, which is honor your transmission warranty after 60K miles if it wasn't serviced. "We never told you that sir, by the way your bill is $4,500 due to owner negligence".

According to my service manual (60K) and dozens of samples sent to get analysis, change it at or before 60K miles.

Sounds about right. My manual always stated 60K miles (96,000 Kms).
