truck always ran great. one day started up and drove off as usual and the problem was immediately present. i checked the timing and cleaned the maf and it made no difference. fast forward to today and i started truck and drove off. up until i got up to speed and drove a little the truck drove as it should but it started acting up again. 5 minutes later and i had to bring truck home it ran so bad.

in this video at the start you can hear a loud backfire. i keep the gas steady up until i put my signal on but the rpms fluctuate the whole time. going up the street im at about 3/4 throttle. not shown but idling, reving at idle, and wot dont show these symptoms. got any ideas before i get my hands on a scanner?

I'd say check the Air filter just in case it's contributing factor. The air filter by itself won't do this. Next the MAP/MAF sensor, Check resistance of Plug wires (arcing) coil pack or fuel filter plugged. Sounds like weak spark or not enough fuel. Possibly bad injectors or cracked vacuum line.

You might have some "New" codes for your current problem.

running the gas tank that low on E(under 1/4 of a tank)can greatly effect the fuel pump causing it to over heat and fail

Not true, just a wives tale.

I'm not even sure what engine we're dealing with, you never said. Sounds like a v6 though.

Get a fuel pressure gauge on there asap. Sounds like a failing fuel pump to me. Also a failing MAF would account for the strange behavior, but you really need to make sure you've got appropriate fuel pressure 43.5psig. Autozone kit comes with a banjo bolt adapter and then tape the gauge to the windshield. And yes it sucks to put the banjo adapter on.

the fuel pump is located inside the gas tank and uses the gas in the tank to cool the pump, when you run your car/truck constantly under 1\4 tank or worse on E the pump can over heat and fail, how do I know this:( it happened to my truck in my Signature picture I was running it on E all the time and the pump failed it was a costly mistake had to remove the gas tank and replace the pump when it kicked out and died. Also in the OPs case having such a low level of gas can starve the engine when going around turns or uphill can cut off the gas supply to the fuel pickup tube causing such behavior as he stated, possibly
