The stock axles handle 35" tires no problem 37" and larger you start having some issues with strength.
If you kept the whole vehicle stock except mild suspension lift and wheels, let's say you put both the jk and the Tacoma on 33s, do you honestly believe that the Tacoma will be able to perform as well as a jeep?

A common axle swap in TJs is a ford 8.8 in the rear (junker out of an old explorer) and a HP D30 out of an old XJ. not the best by any means, but inexpensive and will handle 35 or 37s without a problem. I was able to get both axles bought and installed for me (didn't have a welder) for under $1200 and have never had a problem, and I'm not easy on my old jeep.

On the street ya they work fine, 35" tires on a stock Jeep44 is actually pushing it.

To answer your question, yes. The only limitation of the Taco is the wheel base which isnt much difference than an unlimited.

So the OR model rear differentials are howling and a few have grenaded with 260/70/16 tires, and the Jeep axle is suspect with 35" tires?

    Got it.

Bet you there are more blown axles on a Jeep than howling difs in a Tacoma. Also the howling difs and the few grenades are extremely exceptional.

    JK Dana 44: Ring Gear 8.9", 32 Spine 1.41", Non C-Clip, Pinion 1.625"

Issue with the JK's is the factory lockers, they go bang pretty easy, and front axle tubes are pretty weak.

I don't own a JK but the general consesus on JKowners, Jeepforum, wranglerforum, etc is that they are complete garbage and not as strong as a true D44. Issues with balljoints, axle tubing etc. D44 on the inside D30 on the outside.

what you will miss most is parking the jeep vs tacoma!! i had a 92YJ.
also i would think you will like that color but after a while it might get old, that's just my opinion. the first time i saw that color on the lot i had sunglasses on and i thought it was great then took of sunglasses and it looked plain beige so i passed. i would ask on the quicksand thread if any remorse in choosing that color.

Bet you there are more JK Wranglers running 35's than Tacomas.

And also bet there are more "inexperienced" Jeep owners who "assist" their axle into oblivion :D

And gauging from comments here, the howling diff doesn't seem to be all that rare.

More Jeep mall crawlers, thats why :) Almost every JK owner I see is a soccer mom daily driving.

Definitely agree with a lot of inexperienced drivers, just give it more gas!!. As far as howling difs there have only been like 25 people that reported it? Mostly on 2016s if I recall. Would love to see a poll. I tried to search but there are too many other threads about various howls across tacomas.

Ok so, I have emailed a bunch of dealers around my state. So far the lowest I have is $33,994 plus TT&L. That is for a New 2017 Tacoma 4x4 double cab TRD Off Road automatic in Quicksand. It is pretty bare with only charging and connectivity package and the V6 tow package, which is really all I cared for. Is that a good deal?

I was 42 DCLB premium tech, lift, TRD wheels, etc. I wouldn't complain about 34

I actually sold a 2013 JKU, 3 inch lift, 35's Etc (before that had a 2008 JKU, same mods) for my 2017 TRD OR. Here is my take on it.... The good: the Tacoma is quite inside, ride is smooth, has some pick up, reliable, nicer interior, has a truck bed. The bad: its boring compared to the JKU (top off, doors off, hard trails), the 16+'s don't have a huge market for parts yet, and there is no Tacoma wave haha. The Tacoma is trail capable, but lets not get it twisted, a JKU on 35s will take you places the Tacoma of 33's will not. If you only do mild off-roading at best, then that doesn't matter. Both are great for what they are, I'm giving the Tacoma a shot and I don't really have any huge complaints besides the rear end HUM mine has, but when those 2018 JKUs come out, it's going to be hard for me not to get one over the Tacoma. Best scenario, get both.

I had a 2013 JKU MOAB edition (rear locker). Lifted w/ almost 14" of travel fox shocks, 35" tires, AEV bumpers, etc. Hardly ever had the top or doors on. The thing was insanely fun off road -- definitely more fun than the Tacoma, and honestly pretty much anything.. it was like a full sized ATV. I'd follow my buddy's raptor off jumps even.

Then I had a kid. I feel more comfortable with my daughter in my truck. The Tacoma is also easier to pick up random shit all the time (my house is full of little tikes furniture now...). The Tacoma is still loads of fun off road.

In a perfect world I would have a truck, sports car, a jeep, and a commuter car. Unfortunately, that isn't an option.. and the Tacoma fits the most roles.

Thank you. It's super snug, but I do have two anchor points using turnbuckles.

Yup, still got my trusty old jeep. For all the times my Turd gen is broken down...

here is my Turd coming back from Mexico after being stuck in 4Low (vacuum actuator broke)

here is my Turd getting saved by a friend after the wheel brake cylinder leaked and I lost all brakes on a muddy, cliff road.

I think I remember this, was this that plastic piece that sits on the transfer case. Not warrantied?

Actually, no, correction. Plastic piece that's attached to the front axle.
