I think I have a different problem. Just noticed it the other day when shifting from park to reverse, the transition occasionally takes more force on the shifter and makes a slight clunk. Normally it takes very little force and is smooth and fairly quiet. Its immediately noticeable and just doesn't feel as nice. After it clunks into reverse I can shift back and forth between the two smoothly like normal.

This is sitting at a dead stop.

Anybody else have this type of issue?

There is a transmission TSB to fix this issue. Search bar will bring up a lot of results on the forums.

I appreciate the response. I have read through that thread a bit, but I don't see anyone mentioning the issue I have. No delay in between P-D or P-R, but an inconsistent clunk from the actual shift lever. Happens sitting perfectly still.

Checkout TSB-077-16 Rev1 which might address this

    It's related.

Ask them for the TSB and to check your fluids (manually).

Hey OP.... would you be parked on a slight incline by any chance..?? If so, if you do not set the park brake BEFORE putting it into P, the tranny will be holding the truck and not the brake.... It will make a clunk when pulling it outta P if on an incline and no P Brake used.

Good habit is to set the P/B first then put in P...

I agree with this and practice it. Unfortunately, I at times have a hard shift from P to R as well. Even parked level and giving idle time to settle.

You could have weight on the parking pin. Try this before any TSBs. Next few times you park, put the drive in N and apply the Hand brake, then shift to P. The truck's weight should now be supported by the hand brakes and not the transmission.

I'll definitely try that! I'd rather it be me and not the truck. What you are all saying makes total sense... I've always had light weight cars that have never done this, makes sense in a heavier vehicle.

I'm almost sure it's what @over60 mentioned. I tell everyone the same thing, always set the parking brake before letting go of the brake pedal and before setting it to park. I cringe every time someone doesn't do it and when where about to take off I see them fight with the gear shifter and experience the clunk. Then I proceed to explain, I have them retry it and they notice the difference. It even happens on even pavement.

It's normal, even my 2nd Gen did this. My new third generation also does it. Especially when cold. Also had tsb Rev 1 done and did OK for a few hundred miles but now back to always shifting up to fourth gear to rapidly bogging down engine when pushing on the gas then ecu say hey wait thats not what he was asking for, down shift quickly then shift back up.

    - release hand brake
    - release main brake
    - drive away
