added a wedge of rubber mat in between the dash and the windshield.....got rid of the rattle/squeak.

Now if I could only figure out how to get the back seats to stop rattling.

So I was spending an inordinate amount of time changing the spark plugs and wires today partially because I noticed the valve cover ventilator from the left side had been belching oil up into the throttle body for however long the previous owner ran it. I did what I have on most any rig with this issue and capped it at the air intake, let the hose from the valve cover vent to outside. Gonna buy an end filter for it and do a sea foam treatment through the intake manifold.

the dash rattle thing, does that only affect the third production run tacos? I have a 2000 and it does not have that problem. My '02 however always did. I just assumed it was due to the major head-on collision it sustained before I bought it.

I took that tube out of the intake, you know the one that comes from the driver's side valve cover. I put a cheap VatoZone chrome cone filter on it and capped the hole in the intake. No more oil belching into the valve body.

Okay, I know you posted that you are a little technology slow, but please for the love of toyota gods, could you take pictures of this process. I've had oil belching up past the upper plenum and down the intake into my air filter for a while now. I would love to see if this helps out my 230k 3.4l. Greatly appreciated! :homer:

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
How difficult is the deck plate mod to do? I'd like to wake my 3.4 up a little!

Deck plate mod is pretty easy if you don't mind cutting a hole in your air box. Unfortunately "waking up the 3.4" may be slightly overstating the result - in reality all it does is make a lot of noise when you gas it and let more dirt/water into your air filter.
Everyone I know who has done it rides around for about a month with the deck plate off, then screws it back on and never touches it again.

This may be true. I seemed to gain a positive result although I did it at the same time as a spark plug change and intake silencer delete. I did like the change in sound though. To me it was good to hear the engine rather than thinking it had died at a stoplight because it was so damn quiet. That and it gives the impression of speed which is good when you're poor and driving a beater.

How would you test something like this without having a dyno. I got two trucks, one with and one without. I'm thinking I'll swap that ventilated airbox in there and run around for a while. Maybe if I wear earplugs it'll feel about the same - dunno

So what does work? That is to kick the 3.4 up a little - besides a supercharger. I think increased airflow is always a good thing, as long as it comes from a cold, clear source. Many people have claimed snorkels give you better, more air. It makes sense, although I don't feel like running around with one in the desert for that reason alone. I'd always be looking for a puddle or something to use it - maybe in a mall parking lot. I never noticed any more dirt or water in my airbox after but guess it depends where you drive.

I did however put a screen over the opening for the elbow and the deckplate hole. Dead mice and their nests don't improve airflow.

Snorkels aren't made for water, they're for deserts. Having the intake air source higher up allows for cleaner/less dusty air.

you know I like that. I always wanted one of those just for the breathing reason but didn't want to look like a poser. I think I might scab one up for my old truck out of muffler pipe.
