I make less than my local counterparts, but that's supposed to be corrected. My benefits are good, job security very good, and we are very proud to support our clients.

This, makes up a fair amount of the pay. Being out of work for even just a few months can mess you up. Most "out of work" situations can also easily go 6-12 months these days on a lucky turn of events.
