No need to go away to PM, threads take on a life of their own and wander around a bit. I'm sure folks would love to know about any updates to that system which create additional options. Here's as good a spot as any.

The company that I linked actually is "hacking" the ENTUNE units to change Navigation Maps, Radio Settings (Region Settings), and Language Settings that are not available in the US on the Tacoma ENTUNE radio. It is most definitely possible to modify the radio... just need someone stateside to do it, and to possibly get a different OS uploaded to it as well. Here's hoping :fingerscrossed:

So I have been oblivious to Apples Car play until today. I got a Hyundai of all crappy cars for my rental in Dallas. Connected the phone and was amazed at how good the user experience was. Maps was great, Siri worked over the air, calls were easy and came in on the head unit exactly like my phone. Music was easy to get to and simple/safe to use. How in the world are we stuck with entune garbage when this has been perfected by Apple? I'm shocked and very disappointed my truck doesn't have it. Love the truck, but it's less than a month old and I would love to find a solution to get Carplay up and running in my pro.

So...there’s kind of a work around that I may have found.

Google “Apple CarPlay dongle”. There’s options (all from China) that basically hack CarPlay into any existing headubit that is driven by android.

So, you’d need to buy a new headunit, and this adaptor. But some of the Joying universal headunits look pretty stock. I may pull the trigger.

Try living with it for a while. "perfected" is hardly the word I'd use for CarPlay.

The part where you have to plug in your phone every time you get in and out of the vehicle gets really old really quick. Sure it's fine when you jump in for an hour commute with no stops. Sucks balls when you're running errands, in and out of the car five times.

Not to mention you're SOL if you want to run Waze or some other app not in the small suite of supported apps.

Entune has its issues, but it's wirelessly connected and you're not f'ing with a cable. Build a Qi charging magnetic mount and then you don't even need to worry about plugging in for power.

I was resistant for EXACTLY this reason. Enter the new Alpine iLX-107.
    http://www.alpine-usa.com/index.php/product/view/apple-wireless-carplay-ilx-107

I may try to experiment with this. My key question is... just how much of the dash experience does the Entune unit control. Specifically, will I lose the small display right in the center of the dash between speedo and tach?

Yes, *wireless* carplay would remove most of my objections to the platform. Is the ILX-107 finally shipping now?

The integration questions are certainly relevant, not only the info to the instrument cluster but also the vehicle controls pieces in the Entune headunit.

I really don't have a problem with the entune unit. Sure, some parts of it suck, but same for every other one I've used including carplay. It gets the job done and doesn't annoy me any more than any of the others have. YMMV *shrug*

It looks like the ILX 107 is shipping and there are about 40 reviews of it on Crutchfield.

So I glanced through the links, but has anyone extracted an ISO and been able to reupload it without some wonky checksum problem?

Toyota *has* to to have cryptographically signed their code.

They have. But with root access to the OS should be able to add keys.

Be interesting to know if it can handle the vehicle tweaks as well with the add ons.

Wireless is what CarPlay needs to be workable for me.

Also kind of has to run Waze...

Hrmm, I wish I had the balls to try this on my head unit. Ideally I could mess around with it in virtual box or something so I wouldn't have to risk bricking my headunit.

With complete root access we should be able to load Android auto

Yes. A VM emulator would be ideal. I think the link I posted might not be relevant for the Entune we have, but even if it's a start... That one guy was going to do a JTAG OS dump but then went ghost. I think without the original OS we'll be pissing into the wind for quite a while.

Agreed, only downside to my truck is not having it. Don’t want and aftermarket radio. Can’t wait to try something!
