They are no joke and for the most part there isn't a good rhythm to them either, they are just brutal on your truck. A stock 2nd gen will get high centered in the big ones if you go nice and slow.

Anyone know of any reliable shops that have experience in regearing the newer Toyotas? I'll be going to 40s on 20s soon and the next mod right after that is regearing to 4.88 with a rear air locker. I know Jason can do a rear gear/locker install but he said he wouldn't be able to do the front clamshell-style diff.

The next most reliable place I know of is Yotamasters in corona. Bit of a trek from San Diego though.

You might be able to ask James at The Truck Shop if he can do that. They've been reliable for the work I've had done.

edit: Do NOT go there for diffs.

Avoid at all costs. I've had 2 separate friends get Diffs setup there and both times they've been set up incorrectly

^^^^^^^^this guy gets it. Sad to say, I had lots of customers that have came to me after having unfortunate experiences with the truck shop.

Yea, I went there for an alignment and they couldn't get it done right. Went to an Express Tire and they dialed in my alignment perfectly.

Try them on a dirtbike at 40mph, farking horrible!!! I got that section in 2008 and it was miserable....relentless.

Yep, I took one apart and was gonna do gears and the only way to measure backlash is to reassemble the entire clamshell in order to check. Terrible design IMO, but Im not an engineer soooo. If I had my own 4x4 I would do my own just to practice, no joke. I just dont want to do a customers and have any issues, I am 99% sure I can do it but that 1% makes me worried...
I have taken one apart and didnt feel comfortable so I reassembled it. If it was my own truck I would go for it!

I have one on a current build I need to do right now as well. I have a local driveline shop that does the fronts for me, maybe I will hang out and watch them, that would be a smart idea actually.

Yep, you and me both man. When James was doing everything all was well. I have the same issue, so much work Im slammed all the time, but thats because of the work I do, not employees, been there done that, over it. Hard to have employees that will do the same as you will when it comes to detail!

What local shop do you go for the fronts? Maybe I can hit you up for the rear and have them do the front. Also, what if I could get a hold of a front diff from a parts recycling yard. Could you work on that for however long you need and then just plop that onto my truck when it's ready?

I want to say there's some sort of tool you need to split the clamshell third member on the front. I can't remember exactly.

ECGS sells fully assembled diffs and then you send your core back, they are probably the best in the country if you have a bit of time.
I had Oceanside Driveline do some for me way back, and they were solid. Like I said I have one needing to be done (actually 3 if you count the 2 waiting!) so I am going to call and check to make sure they still have a tech that can do them as they are not your typical 3rd members...or you could just put a used one in after the shop builds the diff like you said.

They are an interference fit so yeah they dont just fall apart, its also a MFer to measure the backlash as you cant really put a regular dial caliper on them to check backlash (you would need a super long tipped dial indicator) and need a way to lock the carrier as not to mess with your measurement. I saw some videos but it was super redneck "wing it" type of stuff trying to get the backlash right. But one could measure it on the pinion flange before and just match it afterward (or a bit tighter actually since new will wear in a bit), but thats not the right way to do it.

Poor little car getting blown away by a class 1! Are they using Powerline rd this year? Looks like it..
