I'd say it's due to the longer driveshaft on non 4x4s. Longer = lower critical speed and they don't want to mess with it.

Yes, without the 4x4 transfer case the shaft required is an extra foot or more longer which is why they don't do it. Think about it, you'll be bolting it directly to the transmission output instead of having the transfer case in the way. :)

    No, it's 100% custom built.

Was there an option to go with a larger splined section where this failed? Also, how much $?

No, not according to the numerous driveline shops I talked with. The problem is trying to retain the Toyota carrier bearing and flanges. You can go full custom with a different carrier bearing but it will require crossmember modifications for mounting and it'll be a mixed bag of components to make it work, and also much, much, much more expensive.

That being said, it will be what I do next if this one piece has another issue.

Question for the people that are using the 1 piece shaft. Are you using shims in the rear too? And if so what degree?
I used a TW driveshaft on my lifted Cherokee, it was the cats ass.

I'm using 2.5 degree shims with mine. I've heard it's one degree for every inch of lift.

PTM, do your vibes go away in 4 wheel drive? If so, you might want to look into swapping out your front differential drivers side needle bearing and replacing with East Coast Gear Supply bushing.

I'm using the 2.5 degree shims too. With a double cardan joint, you want to point the pinion right at the transfer case.

Not sure if it vibrates in 4wd. I'll give it a run but I need the right conditions to do it. thank you for the insight

So under a moderate load it doesn't come up (wrap) too far.
I wonder if I put the 2.5 or maybe a 2.0 in if it would help me. I've got just very slight vibes below 8mph on acceleration with a two peice. Got there by dropping the cb. Trying to not have to sink more money ya know........

I have a local shop welding in a 1310 double cardan joint behind my OEM carrier bearing just like @1MK had originally. I specifically asked my guy if he had to use a smaller diameter shaft or spine segment to make it work and he said no, he wouldn't need to change any of those things. It should be noted that he's modifying the OEM shaft and not starting from scratch (which is what I really wanted) so I SHOULD end up with a full strength shaft with a 1310 double cardan joint. It should be done tomorrow or Friday. Waiting on pins and needles here. Stay tuned.

Hi all, prospective Tacoma buyer here. The abundance and lack of solution to this issue has made me nervous to buy one :( can anyone tell me if this is limited to 4x4s? Or maybe just lifted trucks? Or possibly a range of model years? Thanks for any help! :)

Really just lifted trucks for the most part. Some people say they have some vibrations on stock suspension but I believe the majority of the people experiencing the issues have lifted the truck which changes the geometry of the shaft angels.

Try not to worry about it. You're buying a quality truck.

I've got the 15-25 mph vibe on a 100% stock Sport, but it's not so bad I'd consider getting rid of the truck over it. I'm thinking about the TW driveshaft, but it's not a top priority right now....
