Antlers Shed Hunting

Hey guys I was just wondering what you shed collectors,and hunters suggest are some good hiking boots to walk Miles through snow,mud ,hot,all terrains ?

 

I like Danners...

 

I love the Under armour Bozeman's, but my Danner's are great too. Honestly any boot needs to be broken in first (40-50 miles) and everyones foot is different. I use A-line insoles with all my footwear and that has made a world of difference on long days.

 

Thinking of new pair I've only been through a few pairs that didn't last long ,the danners is there a certain brand u can suggest can't wait to get back out there in woods heres couple of last year's finds

 

holy guacamole! That'd keep my dog occupied for a year!

 

Also, I'm curious about people's thoughts on Muck Boots. I'm looking to possibly get a pair for fall-spring use here in Georgia. I take my dog out in whatever weather Mother Nature throws at us and Muck seems to be quite reputable.

 

I shed hunt up here in Eastern Wa. Buddy of mine has used many different brands over the years but now he swears by his Muck boots. They are the woody max, warm and dry! We usually have snow shoes strapped on too so they seem very durable on the outside. No easy walking, ever... I am not a rubber boot kinda guy but when then snow is 2 feet deep in the draws and then bare ground on the Slopes, my feet end up wet and cold. So...I might just get some. Fwiw, good luck out there!

 

I've worn Meindl's for years. If I get in deeper snow, I wear my leg gaiters with them.

 

THanks for input fellas I'm still deciding .... went out today walk 8miles in 1"-3" of snow came back soaking wet lol

 

X2 on the Danners. My most comfortable boots that are goretex lined are from Colombia though. Gets what's comfortable and water proof. None of its any good if they are uncomfortable though.

 

I use Danners and my feet stay dry, or get yourself some Whites like my work boots haha

Also do any of you have tips on shed hunting without a dog, or do y'all just hike aimlessly?
I've always just found sheds randomly when I wasn't purposely looking for them

 

I've wondered about this too.

My parents have a ranch in Eastern Oregon and in the 15 years or so I have hunted there, I have found maybe a dozen sheds.

A few years back a group of 4 dudes (no dogs) came out and asked if they could shed hunt on the land. We obliged, and told them we have been everywhere, and haven't found many, but feel free.

A few days later they came back with a Ford F250 truck bed FULL of sheds. There had to be a few dozen, some were MONSTER elk (there are a couple resident herds), but mostly just a bunch of mule deer (which are like rats out there).

 

These people are very good at following game trails and finding the off shoots where the herd is likely to drink or huddle up or even spar.

 

Same, I work wild land fire fighting and basically we hike off trails through the mountains and that's where I have found most, the last one I found was I was packing out from duck hunting a river and found one. I mean use common sense like you would actually hunting for the deer elk whatever and think where they usually would hang out, but I'm wandering if there's a good skill to know aside from that.

 

Mucks are great when.it is wet/raining, add an insole to make them fit better if needed. Danners are my goto otherwise, I have shit ankles and even regular hiking boots don't cut it anymore.

+1 on the danners for me. im no hunter but I wear them in all applications for military use and probs the fastest break in period in my experience, wore a brand new pair of their tannicus boots for the first time on a 10 mile road march with no blisters which is unheard of. I also add the green superfeet insoles to all my boots.

 

I'm also a muck boot fan
