There's a little country deli/lunch room just outside of Midway Kentucky that makes the worlds best Reuben. They make their own bread and cut their own krout. It's located in the heart of mega-buck horse farm country. (Next to Spendthrift Farms) All the trainers and grooms go there for lunch. It's over an hour from my house, but we drive there about once a month just for that sammich! They also have WONDERFUL home made pies. Midway is just what it says.....Halfway between Frankfort (state capital) and Lexington. It can be accessed from I 64, but it's more fun to take the back roads from Frankfort.

Back when the kids were still home, we grew a huge garden every year. Our ground grows incredible cabbage. My wife would make and can usually 30 or 40 quarts of krout. To be any good, it needs to age for a few months.

Brats with kraut is delicious. I've looked into making my own but it's a bit more of a process than I want to deal with.

It's not a lot harder to make many gallons as it is to make a small batch. We had more than 2 acres of garden, so from May to October, SOMETHING was going in a canning jar or freezer bags just about every day.

I can't do sauerkraut but I love brats. Had a Chief from Wisconsin teach me how to cook them up right.

    Step 1. Buy Johnsonville brats.
Step 2. Fill a big pot half full of water.
    Step 3. Add:
    Beer (lager)
    1 onion (chopped large)
2 cloves garlic (also chopped large)
Step 4. Add brats. Add water if necessary to ensure all brats are covered.
Step 5. Bring to boil, and continue to boil until all sausages have cook and are fully set. Save 3 to 4 cups of broth.
Step 6. Fire up the grill.
Step 7: Grill brats until golden brown.
Step 8: Enjoy however you like your brats. Save remaining brats in broth.

Not a huge fan of bLOWES either, but I'm sorta on "Perma-Ban" from local HOMEr DEsPOT for driving one of their electric forklifts when no one would help me get plywood down off a top shelf.:p

After asking a half dozen different employees, all of whom gave weak excuses, I just helped myself. The plywood was already on my cart when they showed up. I was unceremoniously escorted out of the store WITHOUT my plywood.
