Oh okay, thanks for the clarification. so that truck is a no go then. Theres no chance of getting a new frame that I'm 80% sure it needs and will probably need soon

I would run, once these frames start to rust there is no stopping it. I live on the north east cost of Canada and my 2004 needed serious patch work done to the frame. I bought my 2005 because I ran the vin and Toyota dealer said it qualifies for a new frame, and I got it 4-5 months later.

The wording of the final settlement is quite clear stating that class members are those who owned a listed vehicle "on or before the date of the Preliminary Approval Order" (12/2/2016). That specific date is stated plainly in the Long Form Notice to class members:

To my mind this makes the purchase of any '05 to '10 Tacoma by anyone living in the "rust-belt", or having significant frame rust in any other location, a no-go--UNLESS the price is low enough, and the buyer is fully aware of what they are getting in to. I.e. it puts the value of such trucks right into the crapper...

    -----------------------------------
It should be noted that a forum member reported a telephone discussion in which a representative of the law firm pressing the action contradicted this stating it did not matter when a vehicle was purchased. However not being inexperienced in interpreting legal documents I believe that person was incorrect in their understanding of the terms. There is no ambiguity in the court documents.

Well would they still be a no-go if the frames were replaced already?

If the frame has been replaced it should be new enough to not be rusty. Also I believe they are made of a better steel (or at least one would think). Krown, rust check, fluid film, etc, the underside of it if it's a newer frame.

Well obviously they would not be--however if I lived it the rust-belt (which I will never do again in the 12 to 15 years I have left), and was hoping to keep the truck for some extended time, I would still be wary until it has been shown that the replacement frames are any less susceptible to rust than the originals...

There are plenty of them here that have never seen slushy/salty roads, find one, fly down and drive back...

Why do you assume every truck needs a new frame?

Even some of the ones who live in winter wonderland are just fine, because they were cared for.

And certainly those who have lived in non-corrosionville are just fine, and can be protected if moved to the badlands.

Vehicles have rusted out for decades, frames included. Toyota had a lousy batch and did not address that soon enough. But they spent millions on replacements, over a span of years. Problem is, not all owners did their part to play at that party. So 'some' of the current failing frames that aren't qualified for the campaign lay square in an owners lap.

Anyone buying a used anything in salt country needs a proper frame exam. Not a head-under-the-truck-that-looks-good exam, but an on a lift, beat it with a ball peen, probe it with a pry bar, look inside with a boroscope exam.

    ^ Well stated!

With my being a newbee here, and the far too prevalent "it must be someone else's fault" mentality of our times, I have almost consciously avoided the owner responsibility issues...

As well you should. Nothing wrong with a post winter clean up and light refresh for summer. Then a heavy app in the fall prep process.

I guess you're right, I just have to be more keen on looking at the entire frame. I might be looking at some this week so ill see if they can put it on a lift for me.

Side Note** I see that you live in Clearwater and I just want to say that I've been there for the past 2 years on my spring break and I love it there. So clean, everyone is so friendly and the gulf is so clear.

Some years ago I would buy old Porsche 911s to mod for track use. Models prior to 1975 did not have an anti-corrosion treatment (or at least not an effective one) so there were plenty of rotted-out monocoques. I always got a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) performed by a qualified tech which cost $100-150. And that price included a long list of items besides checking for a rusted out tub - basically, all systems were evaluated and their conditions noted. I would imagine a pro wrench familiar with Tacos would do the same thing for a reasonable price. It's a prudent investment that offers you peace of mind and could help you avoid a loser. And it ain't bad to have in your hand a list of everything on the truck that's bad or weak when you're negotiating the purchase price.

A week or two and it'll be sold if it's damn near perfect and decent price.
