So I just installed my BAK revolver x2 tonneau cover on my 2015 TRD Sport. I am already planning on contacting the vendor/BAK about being sent a new cover because one of the teeth that click into the track does not fully disengage when you pull on the latch cord and tends to get stuck.....

However, onto the actual reason for my post. I am wondering what you all think of the fitment of the cover on your tailgate when fully unrolled. I was able to find review videos of the cover on the 3rd gen Tacomas and other brand truck beds, but not 2nd gen Tacomas. In every one of those videos the cover lays flush on the surface of the tailgate door when the door is in the shut position, thus deterring anyone who would try to pry it open. When I installed it on my 2015 Tacoma, the cover actually sits a good inch above the tailgate door and i can basically reach my hand through the space between the cover and the tailgate and pull the unlocking cord without even having to open my tailgate. I am going to try to play with it and see if i can move it forward enough for the rubber seal to sit snug against the tailgate door, but it is still going to leave a space in under the cover. I am pretty disappointed because it was advertised as a cover that offers hard cover security, with soft cover maneuverability. It almost feels like they designed it for a different truck bed and tried a cheap McGyver fix to make it fit the Tacoma, rather than redeveloping it to work the way it's supposed to work with the vehicle.

Has anyone had this issue? Or at least found a solution? Thanks. I have a 2015 TRD Sport Access cab with 6ft bed.

Bak's website says it only fits 2016-2017 Tacomas. Am I correct that you bought Bak # 39427 for a 2015 Tacoma with 6 ft bed? Might have something to do with your issues.

I just had the Bak X2 Revolver, P/N 39407, installed on my 2006 Tacoma TRD Sport Long Bed a few days ago with the same gap issue. I too spoke with Bak Industries and was informed they are working on the issue. I am a little disappointed as well. I am also concerned about how it will perform in the rain since I live in FL and wet season is approaching.

I did come across a video showing a fix for the same issue on previous Bak model, the Roll-X. I was under the impression the X2 had addressed the problem.

Hopefully Bak can come up with a solution soon. They seem like a solid company.

Yeah they have been pretty prompt in their back and forth communication with me since they contacted me. The rep I had been talking to sent me an email yesterday saying that he's sending me "something" that will fix my issue. He did not specify what that "something" is, but I'll have an update for you guys once I get it.

That's interesting. When I spoke with them yesterday they did not mention they had a "fix" available. I look forward to your update. Thanks for the info.

How has the X2 done in the rain? Does the gap allow any water in? As stated, I've only had mine on for a couple of days and have had any rain yet to see how it performs.

Well, idk what it looks like on the long bed, but on mine i was able to play with the cover and slide it forward just enough for that D shaped seal to fit snug right against the tailgate door when it's closed. If you just loosen the bolts on the cover, you should see that they are able to slide in that fixture before tightening them in place. I only had to move it forward maybe 0.25 inches, but it created a much better seal where that space is. I live in PA, and we got some pretty heavy rain earlier last week (like legit FL type downpour) and my stuff stayed dry. There was some leakage, but I expected as much and it was minimal. I also cut a rubber mat (think like the rubber flooring they use in gyms) to fit my tailgate bed. This allows any water that sneaks in through the cracks to drain through the grooves in the tailgate, while keeping everything on top of the mat dry. Only thing that i'd warn you about is to wipe off the water on top of the cover if you decide to open it after the rain. I know, it sounds obvious, but i was a little too eager to check the dryness of the tailgate and threw the thing open, not realizing i would empty all of the standing water on top of the cover into the bed haha. We're supposed to get a lot of rain again tomorrow, so I'll try to get some pics if it clears up before it gets dark.

I got a little rain on it during the night and it seemed to keep the bed dry.

On another note, I never really tried to lift the X2, while the tailgate is locked, to see how easy it is to get to the cables. I am really bummed out how easy it is. There is really no security what so ever. I hope the fix they send you works. It sucks because it looks really sharp on my truck.

    UPDATE:

Recieved a package from BAK today containing these:
    upload_2017-3-31_17-49-12.jpg

One looks like it is an extra D shaped seal to sure up the water protection. The second is a hard plastic piece that I guess gets mounted to the tailgate door which will hopefully eliminate the gap between the cover and tailgate door. There was no directions included so i'll have to contact the rep again to make sure im doing it right. Also, unfortunately my issue with the faulty latch it still being addressed, so I will not be able to show any pictures of the new seals mounted on the cover until that issue gets resolved. Will update as soon as i can.

Thanks for the info. Please let me know if this solution works so I can contact Bak to have parts sent out to me. I look forward to pictures as well.

So I heard back from the rep about getting some instructions on how to assemble the parts above... I'm just going to post the response because it made me just laugh out loud:

"The part I shipped you I have honestly never seen before. It was the best thing I had to offer you. I’m sure the two of us could figure it out if you provide me some pictures and I’ll get with my team.

    Have a wonderful day"

I mean good on them for at least trying to help me, but cmon...

That is crazy. Kind of funny but crazy.

Are you speaking to Jeff? I spoke with him, via their customer service number, and mentioned how someone had been sent a possible solution for the problem. He did not know what I was talking about. He suggested I should wait to see if it works for you and if it does to give him a call back to have one sent to me. He is a nice guy and explained they have two US locations so maybe the "solution" was being taking care of out of their CA location. I think he said he is in MI.

Thanks for the update. Keep us posted how it goes.

Yes I'm talking to Jeff but based on his email signature, it looks like he works out of the CA branch. Will update when I figure his out lol.

P.S. on a separate note, I heard back from the vendor about my faulty latch, and BAK's answer to them was that they'll send my a new latch kit and have me do all the work to fix it...go figure.

Have you had a chance to attach the solution to the "gap" issue and did it work?

Sorry, was away all weekend, just got it installed. Here's the update:

As pictured I received a hard plastic piece and a rubber D shaped tube. I mounted both on my truck, putting the hard plastic piece along the top edge of the tailgate door and the rubber tube on the underside of the cover, which fits snugly against the factory installed D tube. This combination was less than perfect. As Jeff (the tech) had told me, these pieces were not developed to solve this issue on this cover. What I found was that the hard plastic piece stuck out too much and pushed against the factory D tube on the bottom side of the cover, so much so that I couldn't close the tailgate. If i tried to slam the tailgate shut, it caused the last aluminum panel on the cover to warp up, which I figured would not be good for the longevity of the cover. My final solution after playing around with the cover was this: I removed the hard plastic piece and just stuck the extra D tube on. I also loosened the bolts where the cover connects to the track and slid the cover forward about a pinky width, so that the factory D tube fits snugly against the tailgate door when it is shut, but not so much that you can't shut it. Thus, the factory D tube creates a better seal against the tailgate and the extra D tube adds to that seal, and eliminates the extra space, making it harder to stick you fingers under the cover. Below are pictures of the finished product. Not the perfect solution, but it works.

Side note: For my defective latch I was sent a latch kit....Fair warning to everyone who has to change out your latch, don't do it unless your latch is completely broken because it is so difficult to swap out that you'll either break the existing housing or just generally screw it all up. I attempted to change out my factory latches for the replacement they sent me, and it was so difficult to remove the factory latch that I was afraid I'd manage to get it off and not be able to slide the new one in. I decided in the end to give up on it and just deal with it. I'll probably just file down the latch tooth on the one side a bit so that it doesn't catch when I pull on the cord to disengage it.
