OME BP-51 Install Report and Height Adjustment

6 hours should be plenty - 2 hours for the front , 4 for the back

 

I did mine with uca's as well in 5.5 hours. Had help, but didn't have a lift so draw your own conclusions.

 

I had a master tech at my toyota dealership install the lift ( without Total Chaos UCA at the time) and a new set of rims/tires with an alignment in 5-6 hours. If you are installing the lift be sure to immediately do an alignment right after or your truck could drive wacky/ wear your tires badly.

 

Yea for sure, Another reason that I'm trying to estimate my time is so I can schedule the 4 wheel alignment on the same day as the lift install. It seems that 4wp closes at 3pm on Saturday, I will need to find another place to get my wheels aligned near the shop. All of this additional work to try and save a buck... well at least 900 of them!

 

Driving one or two days is not bad before getting an alignment, will help suspension settle a bit also

 

exactly, it's not a dire need thing. just get it done before any fast highway driving and within lets say 50 miles.

 

Not bad?!?! He is removing the stock UCA and replacing with aftermarket ones. The alignment can be so out of wack from the install it could be dangerous for him to drive any sort of distance.

 

how so? give me an example, not just your assumptions.

 

I'm having some difficulty finding an alignment shop that is open after 3-4pm on a Saturday in the Redmond Washington area. Is it actually safe to drive with bad wheel alignment? I will have like a 30-40 minute drive home if I keep to the streets. But I don't want to do anything that will compromise my safety or my $40k truck or my lift kit... Thanks!

 

it won't ride well, but if you check torques of all bolts and such you should be fine.. yeah you'll get excess tire wear, but it's not like your 45 minute drive home is going to be noticeable in the lifetime of the tires.

edit: just use good judgement and drive your truck like a granny.

 

I installed mine at a friends in Puyallup then drove home to Shoreline. If you dont fuck with the lower control arms the only thing that will be way out is camber. With a properly installed lift and uca's you will be just fine.

Light racing gives suggestions for caster settings in their install instructions, you can adjust camber by putting a straight edge on the wheel/tire and using a angle finder to get as close to 0 degrees as possible, then if you want to go further if you measure the front and back of tires, you can adjust toe by making the measurement the same. Like others have mentioned, making sure everything is tightened the truck will be fine, if it is out of alignment, it may not ride as great, but will be fine until he makes an appointment. In all the cars / trucks that i lifted and lowered, i have only had 1 that was almost un-drivable due to the toe being so badly out of alignment, both tires almost pointed 90 degrees facing the outside the vehicle.

 

For those of you that have installed the BP-51's did you keep the pre-load adjustment the same for the fronts? I saw one comment that mentioned like a 2mm difference I assume to compensate for the Taco Lean.

 

That would work or doing the spacer on top also would work fine

 

No need for spacer with adjustable coilovers

 

The BP 51 coilovers have to be adjusted off the truck which means dismantling the suspension. Much easier to adjust the coil overs even and putting on the truck with the spacer

 

I didn't touch the pre-load at all for the front. Don't really notice any taco lean at all.

 

My plan is to adjust the coilovers before mounting them on the truck. I have access to a wall mounted strut compressor so this should be fairly easy. Once I buy/receive a new front bumper I will need to remove the coilovers and readjust the preload. Until then I would prefer to drive the truck properly adjusted for the current configuration.

Do you have additional weight on the font? Hows the ride quality?

 

Yes, I have a 170 pound ARB front summit bumper. Mobtown steel front skid plate which is about 40 pounds. Also Mobtown bolt on sliders. The sliders helped the most with ride quality. When I get a cap/rear bumper the ride should be way better. It rides a little rough with no weight in the back because of the extra leaf in the dakars. When you put weight in the bed it rides really smooth. Offroad it rides like a champ, couldn't be happier. Absorbs pot holes and big bumps really well.
