Places to go off-roading in Washington State?

I'm a complete novice when it comes to off-roading. All i do is commute on freeways and backroads. Looking to test my truck for the first time off-road, but need advice on where to start.

Hey Aaron, I'm in the same boat. I just got my truck not too long ago. Now I'm bleeding money getting stuff to get it ready for some overlanding type fun. So far all I have is a lift and bigger tires. Nice to see interest in this area.

 

Theres probaby 30 of us in the area. I'm in fall city!

 

Sweet. One weekend I decided to "test-drive" a new Tacoma (my existing one is getting pretty old) and BAM, drove home with it. (Well, not exactly, it was en route.) Now I am researching all about off-roading. Being from Florida originally, never really had a need for 4wd so kind of missed out. Better late than never.

By the way, I came across this on Facebook: Mule Expedition Outfitters posted an event for the WABDR, in the slim chance you don't know about it or find this helpful. I Was told it's a cake walk for 4wd so might be a good place to start. (It's meant for off-road bikes, but 4WD is welcome and all public land, so camping ... and stuff.)

Yup, i look over the thread now and then since making this post back in January. And would definitely like to tag a long sometime in the future.

There's a Youtube video on it. The event was a screening of their documentary. There are some places definitely better suited for us than others (think tight shrubs that scratch your paint vs wide open areas.)

 

the BDR is really mellow as long as the snow has melted. If not you can run into some pretty big drifts from time to time.

 

Cool, going to try and look it up soon. And damn!, the whole route is 575 miles. Hope to accomplish the whole trail one day.

 

Probably a Sept thing then. I don't know how hot it can get there in the summer.

 

Hot and dusty. The roads that make up the BDR are pretty common forest service roads that get beat the fuck out of.

 

It's truly more of a two or three day thing. It's a lot of hours in the seat

 

Oh yeah, i bet. Also didn't mean finishing the trail in one day, but that would be a great achievement if anyone has done so, haha.

 

Would you recommend getting a snorkel first?

 

no, its not needed, you'll hardly even need 4-wheel drive, except maybe 1 or 2 spots.
