Coming from Southern California, I have always know them as shells. Also, coming from Southern California constant rain was never really a problem. I’m considering a cab-high, sleek look similar to example in the picture below (Google Image Search).

I found the Snugtop vs. Leer vs. ARE threads in other forums, but I wanted to seek your local advice given the rainy weather all winter up here. Are there any features that I should definitely not forget, or any features that aren’t useful? I like the Leer locker option on that brand, but the Snugtop seems to have a bit better reviews even though it costs more.

I’m not currently considering an RTT, but there is a small chance that I might end up getting one in the future. Should I spend the extra now on a reinforced shell with bars, or can these wait until later? I want the investment to be a long-term one without too many regrets later on.

I bought my snugtop super sport on CL a few years ago for 800 bucks, and its been really good since. No water issues, except for the cracks between the tailgate. I have a long bed and the only thing i would do different is get the reinforced top, and the windoors so its easier to get to my shit. Other than that in my opinion.

I picked up a used Leer on CL. Good shell so far for the last year and a half. I do recommend the reinforced roof if considering a RTT.

If you even think you might want a RTT, get the reinforcement. Otherwise, you will have to get a new topper or risk damage in the future. As many say; buy once, cry once.
I would not buy a topper without the rails or the reinforcement. The rails can be added later but it's easier and often less costly then doing it later. I engage in kayaking, mtb, hauling materials, and camping with a RTT. If looking for a shell, I would go that route.
For me, I determined that I did not want a shell and opted for rack systems instead (an ongoing transformation).

This buy once cry once thing is a super recurring theme. Just do it right the first time, it really does make a difference. Even if it's not a rooftop tent, there'll be something that makes you glad you did it right. Like the 400 feet of 2" dom that you're gonna help somebody pack home one day.

Wassup Tom. Yah I wuz at the mall today with my wife and son. Had to go Nordstrom and at lunch at the sushi place first so we parked on the side entrance by Sees candy. I saw u last minute. By the time I parked and got my Ohana out my wife's White Sequoia. U went in the grey door
