Despite your lack of proof or facts to back up this claim, sales doesn't equate to overall quality and reliability.

I would love to know how many 3rd gens sold have been AT, how many have been MT, how many have gone back for TSB, sold back, lemoned, etc etc

It would resonate inside the cab and literally cause vibrations that felt the equivalent of running a weed eater when you drove 60. At least after the speedometer broke I still knew how fast I was going!

So you are saying Toyota should just replace diffs on demand because you don't like the way it sounds?

I bet it did! I get a noise like that indicates something is wrong. My beef is with so many posts on this forum complaining about a noise that you literally have to manipulate the truck to make.

While I don't like the whine, I can't IMAGINE that Toyota is turning out garbage rear ends. There must be something else going on. Both manuals and autos have it and they have different rear ends.

Mine only does it between 58 and 62... so does most everyone else. That's incredibly specific...

That's when mine does it as well. That's what I'm saying everyone is flipping out on this forum about a specific sound at a specific speed under a specific throttle pressure. The sierra I was talking about I drive for work it happens literally between 55-60 under very light throttle. I'm not saying I like the whine either it's just so ridiculous to make a huge deal out of such a small specific thing. If all of our diffs explode then I guess we will have the answer then lol.

Didn't the first years of the 2nd gen have some issues to? When i bought my truck i took it from 11:30 to 3:30 while they handled the wifes new lease and assessed my chevy. In that test drive i realized what i was reading on the forums and what the truck was actually done were two very different things.

Yes, when the sound is 400hz and so loud it can only be drowned out with music blast at 45+. No vehicle should have a howling differential.

I also think Toyota should fix or replace the following "on demand" because I don't "like" them:

    Floppy hoods
Transmissions that clunk, stick, refuse to shift, etc
Brake assemblies for major buzzing issues
    Rear leafs if they sqeak
Drive line angles for rumble strip vibes
Sunroofs if they explode for no reason
    Headliner if it starts falling

Your argument is stupid. I'm not really sure why you are defending them so hard. You on their payroll?

The service manager at my dealership is a great guy. When he went for a ride along with me to hear the diff howl his exact words were "wow it sounds like my old 1984 Lincoln and it had a bad rear end"

My 2nd gen had issues too. Even though it was a 2011... well into 2nd gen production.

I actually found claims in the forums of gear hunting to be spot on. I had a Dakota that hunted... didn't want another.

Dang I can taste the salt in your post. What argument? I was simply asking a question and why are you hating on the truck so bad? Are you on the payroll for Honda or GM? It's called a warranty. Take it in get it fixed or trade the damn thing.

    Exactly.

If anyone heard this noise on their vehicle they'd take it to the shop and expect it to be fixed. Toyota apparently didn't think we'd mind as long as they came from the factory like this.

It blows my mind that people can hear this noise and be like "meh, I don't mind it. I just really like listening that sound a phone makes when it's ringing...But like all the time. Especially on the highway. "

I hope the salt stays on my posts. I wouldn't want my turd gen frame to rust.

I mean, since Toyota seems to bringing back old car problems with their new flagship truck.

Yeah why I've been lurking without signing up since I got mine in Nov. I don't know how to go about properly judging the differential noise or clunky shifting. What I do know is that I get like 13 mpg city per the dash. I have kind of noticed that I may get some better mileage if I position my foot higher on the pedal, so I'm trying to adjust my normal habit of toes pressing mainly on the bottom part of it.

    Other things I've noticed:

    - On chilled mornings there's a light rattling coming from somewhere on the passenger side. Or it seems from that side. One of those things that goes away after driving a bit, so don't think I'll ever make it to the dealer with it still happening. So if anyone has had this, and figured it out thanks for the info. I haven't been able to have someone sitting there yet when it happens. Usually chilly mornings.

    - I used the 4x4 high once on icy roads, and I struggled to turn on to streets or into a couple parking lots. Seemed stiff, and like the back tires just stayed put. Just odd, and kind of concerning if there were a car at the turn in. May have just been the ice or normal, but still kind of disappointing a bit.

    - Random one...the XM radio one just flashes "check antenna". Sales guy didn't know what was going on. And don't care enough for xm to waste time on it.

    - Pretty "windy" loud on the driver side window on the hwy.

It's my first Tacoma, so don't know really what's normal or not. Why I lurk when I can to learn. Btw - it's a '17 access cab TRD-OR. I do wish I would have been patient to get a 4-door long bed pop up as it sux finding out I can't put a rack able to handle much weight on the cab for a pop up tent.

    Thanks ZachMX. Much appreciated.

Yeah the passenger side rattling does seem to be a speaker deal thinking I blew it out already, but when I turned the radio off it would still be there. So that makes sense. It's annoying as I'm trying to figure out while driving alone, and just knowing it's coming from that whole general area. You've saved a potential pedistrians life, so sleep well knowing that.

Makes sense on the 4x4. Pretty icy in spots, but then not on others so didn't take it off. I'll keep that in mind next season.

Glad that I got 3 of my more concerns figured out. Now if there was something to get near some of these higher mpg #s I've seen. Ha.

    Thanks again!

No prob man. I know I was getting 16-18 at first, truck seems to need an initial adjustment period. Could also be your tranny slamming gears as you allude to, I'd ask your dealer about the software update for it and to check the fluid. Good luck.

I think you all scared the OP away!!
@krimson Sure there are folks out there that got a bad one . But I bet more got a good one as I did ! It's a Toyota not a Nissan . Only advice I would give is get the extended warranty for peace of mind or wait for the 2018 !
