Add some hashbrows and rye toast and that was my breakfast this morning. Had to fast for blood to be drawn (normal shit) and decided to feast afterward.

Well it was crazy. When we first immigrated here my mom was working graveyard at vons while going to school. My dad was throwing newspapers at night and working as a mechanic during the day. Our apartment was sparce...to say the least. My mom told me how each month they'd budget, one month they could buy a pair of sissors, another month needles and thread. My mom made me and my sisters clothes until we were like in the 2nd grade.

And we got out of it. My parents barely speaking any English were able to purchase a condo in a good neughborhood with good schools. By my 8th grade we had our own house and my parents bought me my first $80 pair of shoes. I can't imagine everyone could have such perseverance as my parents did. Raising two kids, living in poverty as new immigrants eventually getting masters degrees and making decent livings from that.

Your parents came from a country outside the US that values living within your means, education and perseverance. Not all countries or cultures, especially sections of ours, do that. In the US the cult of instant gratification has taken deeper root, in part due to everyone viewing social media, seeing how wonderful everyone else's life is, then wanting to make themselves feel better by buying more crap they can't already afford.

My regards to your parents for living like that for you sakes. It's not easy but in the end it pays off.

Heh...I never had an $80 dollar pair of shoes until I was in my 40s :anonymous:

Well what I didn't mention is that one night my mom was crying to her only friend at her work about how rough everything was going and it just so happened that friend was one of those moms that just works to get out of the house. Her husband was a big shot at a huge tobacco firm. Got my dad a really good job in that company.

So it was some freak luck as well.
