How To Install SumoSprings

nice wright up. I got mine from craigslist and was wondering how to install. I will install them in a few months when the weather gets warmer.

Anyone running either Dakar leaf pack or a Headstrong Progressive AAL with their Sumo's? Wondering what kind of space I can expect between the SumoSpring and frame with either... Haven't made up my mind which way I'm going yet, but figure either will be a improvement over the current configuration of frame resting on SumoSprings... Front is buttery smooth with 6112's, but the rear is starting to annoy me after 6 months.

 

I just installed my Sumo's yesterday on my stock OR and am not real thrilled myself. I hope you get a helpful response as this is my next step as well.

 

I'm running wheelers Offroad 1.5 inch progressive aal in the rear with Icon remote resi 2.0s. I removed the overload leaf from the factory pack. I still sit on the sumo Springs just a bit. I gained 1 inch over stock height. But, I also have sliders, a bed rack, a CVT RTT, full wrap around high clearance steel bumper and second spare tire, shovel highlift, etc. I'd guess that's about 600 pounds of additional weight that is always on the truck.

With all that said I ran the same gear prior to the progressive aal. The ride was much harsher before the aal. It is nice and smooth now. I believe removing the factory overoad helped a bunch.

Think about it. With summos and the factory overload you are basically doubling the "overloads ". YMMV but I am very pleased with the current ride.

 

What aren't you thrilled about? I'm considering these, want to here everyone's gripes

 

Front end soaks up bumps, rear end jars now. I have a cap and a bed full of drawers and work stuff so I am hauling around probably #500 of stuff if it matters.

 

So interesting. I've also Somos on my stock OR, and am very happy with the truck. Still though, contemplating perhaps 1 1/2" aal, with 5100s on all 4 corners. Want to retain some positive rake to be level when towing. Really don't want to go back to airbags again. I liked them on my 02, just don't want them this time.

 

The SumoSprings are a great product, and I don't regret getting them for a minute, and they initially even accomplished the lift I wanted; the 5/8" lift making my truck level with 2nd gen 6112's set at the 3rd notch.

It's just like others have said though, with the frame resting on the SumoSprings the whole time, the front is nice and smooth, while the same bumps make the rear much more harsh. Would like to take advantage of a new leaf system, add some rake back into the mix and lift the frame off the SumoSprings, and finally take advantage of my Bilstein 5160's that haven't really had a chance to preform.

Think I may go with a Dakar leaf pack or Wheeler's 8 leaf pack...

 

I just installed Sumosprings myself last week. Stock '17 OR, no cap or extra permanent weight in the bed. The jack I had at the time must have been low on fluid because it didn't really raise up the back end, I ended up compressing them a tad by hand pushing them into place and tapped them in with a rubber mallet. Took about 30 minutes for both sides.

Everyone will have an opinion obviously on how the ride is without a load. For me, there is a noticeable difference but at first I was looking for any difference thus they were more apparent too me. After putting on 500 miles since last week I no longer notice them. I'm not even going to say the difference unloaded in ride quality is better or worse, it was just slightly noticeable.

I haven't towed, however I bought them because my A-Frame trailer on the hitch dropped the stock height down 1.5 inches measured from the wheel well to the ground. With the Sumosprings (taking into account the 5/8 increase in unloaded height in the back after install) the drop now from stock height is 1/2 inch. This accomplished the goal I set out to achieve.

I took measurements from the top of the wheel well above the center of the tire down to the ground (I know more accurate is center of hub but close enough).

Stock height was about 36.5 inches, with trailer on the hitch sat at 35 inches.
Sumosprings added unloaded height is ABOUT 37.25 (or +5/8 or whatever), with trailer on the hitch is now 36 inches. So it isn't dropping a full 1.5 inches as before, but w/ the drop and the 5/8 increase it's where I wanted to be.

I have not towed this trailer on the Taco with or without sumosprings so I can't speak to that - I still need to figure out what I'm doing for trailer brakes and it's in winter storage.

Fwiw I put the sumo's in my 17' DC OR stock last weekend, they went in very easy. They maybe raised the rear up just a bit, the ride seems maybe a little firmer with nothing in the bed, definitely more stable on the street with a full load of stuff in the bed. Hopefully it'll also cure the bottoming out going fast on rough dirt roads.

 

I'll share my experience here-- I took my truck to the spring shop here in my town. The guy there said he deals with the leaning problem on all trucks with leaf spring suspensions. He looked at mine, and after he took the driver's side leaf spring pack out, he noticed that the bottom spring plate (overload spring) had a negative arch to it and was pushing up on the bottom of my main leaf pack, causing the leaf pack to pull the truck down on the driver's side. He re-arched the main 3 leaves and fixed the negative arch problem with the overload spring. When re-arching the 3 main leaves, he added about 5/8" progressive arch to it. The truck now sits perfectly level at a full tank or a half tank or less. The fuel tank, even though it's on the driver's side is on the inside of the frame, and more towards the middle of the truck rather than the far edge. From front to rear now, I'm within 1/16" of an inch side to side.

I think the dealer should have looked into it for me more than they did. They simply looked at it, and contacted Toyota for advice, and Toyota came back and said the 3/4" leaning is within spec when the truck has a full tank of fuel. I'm pretty sure that's BS after what I just learned from my experience with the spring shop.

Whatever works for people to fix the problem if they have it and care- just thought I'd add my experience in case people wanted to take their truck into a spring shop for opinion.

 

When I pulled my O/L leafs out they appeared perfectly flat. Was not aware they should have an arch

 

I think they should be flat, but mine had a negative arch causing some problems, so I think he just corrected that part in addition to increasing the rate to the main leaf pack. I wouldn't be surprised if my issue is not the norm, but just in case other folks might have the same problem with the 2017 models...

Hey there. I just wanted to update. I removed my RTT for an upcoming trip. Now with all the other armor only and my 1.5 inch aal the frame just barely makes contact un loaded. So with 1.5 aal and not the heavy steel rear bumper I have I almost guarantee there will not be any contact with the sumosprings.

 

Anyone in this thread willing to sell me their old bumpstops cheap? Provided they fit I may be able to use them on the trailer I'm refurbishing.

If you already have them removed and can measure properly, what are the dimensions of the plate, and of the urethane/rubber bits?

Sure, what's cheap? You will need the measurements from somebody who has access to theirs at the moment, I won't be home for until weekend after next.

I was getting my 25,000 mile service today and brought in the Sumo Springs.

My thought was have the stealer do it since I was going there anyway and although they would be relatively expensive (I assumed 1/2 hour install), it saves me another trip to somewhere else. I originally planned on doing it myself, but it's been about 2 months and something else always comes up that I need to do.

So the dealer said they would have to adjust the alignment in terms of the 'thrust angle' (isn't that a reference when filming porn?) and the tech wanted a full hour. HA - that's probably BS, but go ahead, I said, just do it...

Well I'm pleasantly surprised as it appears to me that the entire truck is now lifted a bit higher front and rear. I like it - well worth it.
