What antenna would you recommend for the Yaesu? I'm not looking to drill my roof. Was thinking about doing it on a hood hinge or a ditch light bracket. I need the truck to be garage friendly

Crap i forgot the model i'll ask my dad tomorrow. He has a killer +9dB antenna that tuned up perfect.

That said, the roof or hood is the best ground planes. Also most Ham antennas use a NEMO mount which is a 3/4'' hole basically. Have photos in here of mine. You'll either have to modify something or make something for that. i think you could just drill out the CBI ditch bracket..

Thanks man! Still going for sure....now with two rigs..ha

I saw the photos of your antenna mounts. Base looked larger than a CB antenna. I wouldn't be against using the roof if I didn't go into a garage often, but that would just be annoying

Well the other side is they are easy to remove the antennas. Like super fast. Can get caps for the nemo part while you aren't using it.

Well i had planned on doing my rear brakes this coming week and sound deadening stuff......but...after realizing i had a full week off...

Decided fuck it. Im going back to Utah were its warm for some wheeling and hiking!

To do this, dropping Igor off at Toyota to get the rear brakes done and an alignment. Hoping to meet my good buddy Ben on Saturday night! Wish he could stay longer but he can't sadly. After doing some wheeling with him, headed back to the Maze to do some camping and hiking. Then to Arches for more of the same.

Be a nice week away from everything!

Yea wish we had done that last time. We are going to Horse Shoe Canyon though. Has 4 galleries, including the massive Grand Canvas. should be cool. Not going to the overlook this time.

I shall do my part. I just remembered my 18-135 is still damaged  but whatever.

Hey Monte, I ask you about all of the other stuff, so I might as well run this by you:

What do you suggest as a good "starter kit" for someone getting into photography for the first time? I'm interested almost entirely in landscapes and close-up stuff. Also, do you of any good references for someone starting out?

    Thanks as always!

well, really today, a lot of the DLSRs are great starters. The rebel series is nice. There are some great smaller mirror less ones as well sony like the a9000. Nikon's 3xxx or 5xxx seirse is great too. I shoot Canons 60D, now called the 80D, which is there higher end consumer camera low end pro body. the 7D is the first pro body and is the next model up.

I strongly suggest going to a big store that has a few bodies to handle yourself. Why? because you can get a feel for the weight and size but almost more importantly is the button layout and how the camera works.

I know that sounds weird considering you won't know how to operate it much. but that is one of the biggest difference between brands as well as model. The higher end the model, the more buttons you usually get for quick access to change features and options on the camera. Nikon does much different button layouts that Canon as well.

Canon might feel better for you than Nikon.

It is very important to pick a brand you like. Why? Len's. No matter what body you get be it a cheaper rebel or a nicer prosumer or even a full frame bad ass one. The biggest thing that will make difference in image quality is the lens you us. Now when you buy a camera it will come with a kit lens that is generally fine for most stuff. And then there are lots of other lens that are cheaper and more affordable to get. But if you ever decide to invest in some real nice glass for really crisp images. That's where brand loyalty is important as each brand has their own mounts. You can't fit a Canon lens on a Nikon. Not unless you want to buy adapter which is expensive and not the greatest solution to the problem.

I shoot canon as do most of my friends. Some do Sony and i know a few guys that like Nikon gear.

It is funny because the more you do it and the more you learn about images and the more sensitive to colors and things you get. You can almost tell the difference between Nikons and canons...some times..

The other part is no matter what you get. Learning how to use it well is most important. Hell Ben is still shooting an old very cheap and shitty T2i canon. But he really knows how to use it and edit the stuff he gets. So his images look stellar. He isn't using great glass or a great body but knows how it works and knows what to do to make it work out and edit it in PS.

Which is the other side of photography...editing. Knowing a good editing app well pays off big time too. I use Lightroom mainly and Photoshop for other things. There are other out there but i highly recommend LR. Its a nice program and very powerful.

Then it really comes down to experimenting and learning the gear and what you like you stuff to look like. Sure you can buy a camera and just shoot on auto all the time...but that is no fun :p There is TONS to talk about with photography, which really i would love to help with. But it is better if you have a camera you can go out and try stuff with first on.

I love my camera as its a high end consumer prosumer body. Lots of buttons on the outside and a good sensor. The 80D is a good improvement over mine even. But i love having buttons for each function. The lower end cameras you have to go through menus to change it and I hate that. I like shooting in full manual mode usually and changing things fast on the fly as needed.

    You might not care.

If you are going for landscape id get a wide angle lens too. I have the 10-18mm STM lens by Canon for that and it is fun. I really enjoy my 18-135mm as an all around lens because it is so versatile for truck trips. Wide enough for some landscapes. And get in tight on a truck when needed. Very flexible and decent kit lens.

How's that for starters? :p haha

Good advice, Monte. I don't know Jack about cameras, but I know my phone wasn't doing justice. I researched lower cost mirrorless cameras and purchased a used Sony Nex 5 to get started. Is it the best camera? Far from... but it's helping learn and produces photos a million times better than my phone. I'd suggest checking out used items - craiglist - to start with. Tons of people purchase cameras and never use them. Their loss is your gain.

the Nex ones are also nice! Good little DSLRs.

CL has tons and tons of DLSRs everywhere FS usually. Can get some great deals, id just try not to get anything too old. But otherwise, tons of good finds there.

And comon! Gotta learn the cool stuff in the camera! :D we can help..

Come back when you have one. I'll talk you through understanding how to utilize the camera in general way to let you get more into just pointing and shooting.
