    My Tacoma, around 20mpg.

My '15 Kenworth, she's got a drinking problem.

Ouch!! And you drive a manual in your Tacoma???? How many over the road tractor trailer guys I've met that won't have a manual in their private cars !!! Their left leg must drive them crazy searching for the clutch in their automatic car!!!! It did mine after I was forced to buy a 2006 Hyundai Sonata with an automatic transmission because my wife can't drive a stick. . Plus I was always in manual/ sport mode in that car as my left foot was nervously seeking out a non existing clutch. Dannyblues

I almost exclusively use Shell premium nitro 93 and pay about 75 plus cents more per gallon than the cheap nearby top tier regular.

I get 1 more mpg maybe 2?? But I'm assured of the engines top performance for the life of the vehicle.

Shell premium 93 is proven to be the best fuel available on the market due to its top performance as a detergent gas. Far and away above any competitors in the top tier group.

It costs more but I feel it will save me on repair headaches down the road

My opinion but based on independent research and proven performance. Every mile your engine ages. With the right lubricants and care of the cooling system including two year flushing and changing the coolant plus Toyota 0w-20 synthetic oil and more frequent than the owners manual maintenance guide suggests as regular interval changing of differential and manual transmission and transfer case fluids plus more frequent lubrication of the driveshafts I hope to have many thousands of carefree miles and many many years of enjoying my 2016 TRD just in case I can't afford a new one in three years or Toyota drops the manual shift. Then at 67 now this truck may be the last vehicle I'll ever own.

I usually fill up at shell and use their premium 93. It's a proven top tier fuel that's far above all other top tier gas suppliers.

So at $3.05 a gallon I hate to see the pump just rolling along to some high priced total so I fill up about every half tank or so.

My last fill up I pushed the fuel guage under 1/4 tank. I achieved 20 mpg overall but most was highway driving up to 75 mph. Still the pump read $55.00. That was about 18 gallons. That's the lowest I've ever come to empty.

Interestingly every time I full up my gas guage displays a maximum mileage availability of exactly 365 every time even though at 20 mpg it should read about 420 miles until empty but the onboard fuel computer doesn't account for actual used previously mpg as my old Hyundai did. If I was off road or deep in sand loaded to the max and towing and my actual fuel consumption was 5 mpg that indicator would still read 365 at my next fill up but not based on actual real mileage just previously used. Personally I just look at the fuel guage or scroll down the mpg rating or go to the ECO app and check my present actual mpg assessment.

Thanks for your post. It's comforting to know this gas guzzler has as much as a 30 mile reserve. Hope I never need to rely on it however

I have a difficult time keeling it at the posted 55 mph. I can do 60. I too have noticed a significant drop off in mpg at 70 and above. And I'm steady on the throttle!

My state police friend said that legally I could contest any speeding summons at 5 mph over the posted limit and that the ny state police generally give motorists 10 over. But at 15 over if you ask why you were pulled over you may get a sobriety test!

However if you weave in an out you are looking for a summons at any speed. My friend used to say that most like him won't bother anyone going even 25 over the limit which is 80 mph as long either there are no other cars on the road such as late at night or the entire amount of traffic are all maintaining a steady well spaced speed of even 80 mph which has happened to me. ( people in Connecticut drive much faster than I'm accustomed to in NYC or on Long Island where traffic is so heavy you can rarely even drive 55 mph. Took me some time to get comfortable driving even 65 mph )

To maintain good fuel mileage I try to maintain a steady throttle. I always drive in the sandwich lane. ( middle lane ) I pass only onto the hammer lane ( left lane ). Never pass on the granny lane ( right lane ). I don't weave. Again my state trooper friend told me that in actuality the left lane is for passing only plus the ny state police feel that lane is reserved for them so don't drive along it steadily for long distances when there is room in the center lane to move into. I've always observed that practice when possible. My friend is long dead now. He was a year younger than me and we grew up together. I still practice this method of driving in his memory

Driving with a steady throttle especially on the highway while observing 60 mph will definitely boost your gas mileage.

So will keeping your windows closed. I understand you will get better mpg using your AC rather than cooling off by opening the windows on the highway.

Hope my post benifited someone and perhaps will save one of you guys a traffic or speeding citation

You still haven't linked to any independent research and proven performance, or evidence why 93 is getting you 1 or Maybe 2?? mpg better. I call BULLSHIT. I've tried every octane and haven't found any difference, other than E0 which does make a real difference.

I'm 12 years into a 5-lug 2wd tacoma with none of the drama you imagine with Toyota maintenance intervals. 2 year flushing the coolant?, stop acting like it's 1971.

My last fill up took a bit over 18 gallons at $3.05 per gallon for shell 93. My guage read about 1/8 full. That's the lowest I've ever let the fuel drop to. ( it hurts me to see $55.00 as a gas pump display ). So I usually fill up just at or before half a tank. That even hurts.

My other car is a 1987 Chevy Nova with all Toyota mechanicals. 1.6 liter automatic is slow but it gets 36 mpg easily and has something like a 10-12 gallon tank. I fill that up with top tier regular and the tab is often $10.50.

I use the old Chevy Nova when the weather warms up through the early fall here in Connecticut. I save money on gas and keep the mileage down on the Tacoma. Even though it's a slow but economical car with a three speed automatic I enjoy driving it. My mom got her license at 70 years of age while my dad was dying of lung cancer and emphysema and she realized she'd become a widow who'd be stranded in a remote area of New Hampshire where driving a car was a necessity. Mom passed away 4 years ago and I inherited and restored the old Nova to excellent running condition. Still it sucks up the money in constant repairs each year and parts are becoming hard to find but it looks immaculate ( however this spring it requires body work to restore the passenger front fender that occurred at Christmas time while parked at the Danbury mall and it was hit then the culprit took off/ hit and run. ).

You aren't very respectful or polite but still I always appreciate a passionate response even if it's contrary to my opinion. ( still doesn't change my opinion however and I respectfully disagree ).

I positively do get 1 maybe 2 possibly more mpg using premium gas. That fact you will just have to take my word for until I can find additional supporting evidence. But it's my Tacoma and trying both top tier regular vs top tier premium I do get the 1 maybe even 2 more mpg.

I've never had the opportunity to try non EO gas as it's not available anywhere near here in Connecticut or anywhere I frequent in NYC or Long Island. ( except for very high octane gas mostly near boating marinas ). So here I'll have to take your word that non EO gas yields more mpg. ( though you too have not indicated any supporting evidence ). That's ok I believe you.

Second point: if you go to most any you tube site regarding the superior performance of Shell nitro 93 octane gas
and google for that information you too can see for yourself that independent testers as well as Shell gas engineers themselves have shown the benefits of using not only any top tier gas that provides way above the federally mandated addition of detergent additive minimums from all gas suppliers at the pump but that the shell nitro 93 octane gas even goes further than any to provide cleaning detergents to keep your new engine like new. I saw the actual engine breakdown on the video of two new engines side by side, one using the shell, the other another brand gas and the results were remarkable. Independent tests remember. Shell also claims but I didn't see any proof demonstrated that even one tankful of that fuel will make an old engine 65 % cleaner.

I'm sure you realize an engine as clean and as new constantly will run more efficiently ( without all the built up carbon and crud in the injectors, cylinders, on pistons and valves that other non top tier fuels leave behind. )

Last point: True I've known people like you that either perform less than recommended maintenance or use inferior parts or lubricants etc or even like my little brother just let the dealer perform what I consider the minimally necessary maintenance and keep their vehicles 14 years and 200,000 miles with little or no troubles. ( I'd never buy a car from my brother who can't distinguish a problem like I can while driving his car, nor would I buy a vehicle from you who seem to believe like the shop foreman and supposed master mechanic at my dealership shop that only Toyota listed maintenance is required and that as far as grease goes : grease is grease. He also told me that it's never necessary to change any manual transmission, differential or transfer case fluid unless you're a nut who likes to change it every 90,000 miles. ). That kind of attitude or maintenance care I don't perform. I will agree however that like my brother and you I've known many who have had none to little problems for many many years and 250,000 miles without a major problem. It's just not best maintenance for the operation of your vehicle and your vehicle will fail before mine because I take better care of it and admit that I still believe that flushing the radiatior with water and filling it with fresh coolant every two years is positively beneficial for the cooling system parts. The coolant brakes down just as the properties in oil brake down over time and use

The owners manual states to use 87 octane gas OR ABOVE. So what does above mean? Personally I use the Shell 93 and I've observed a beneficial difference of 1 mpg maybe even 2. I can guarantee 1 more mpg. I've found the same with top tier citgo premium when I've used it as compared to Sunoco regular 87 which until tomorrow officially is not a top tier supplier. Take my word for it. It's my vehicle with nearly 12,000 miles on it and these have been my observations. I don't doubt if our mileage was equal , you and I, and we broke our engines down yours would show a loss of power and would be full of carbon deposits and crud wherein mine would be as clean as new.

Finally as far as regular maintenance intervals, like the shop foreman above, none are listed for manual transmission, differentials, or transfer case. I'm not sure if any are listed for engine coolant
but I think common sense should tell you as well as any videos on you tube or on this site under lubrication plus your own visual experience that if you changed those fluids every 30,000 miles you'd discover metal fragments and very filthy contaminated fluids. If like you, you never have changed them after many many thousands of miles and many years of use you'd discover those fluids still working as you say ( and I believe you ) but those fluids would be dark contaminated, metal particle filled goo ).

    That's my reply.

I suggest everyone on the Tacoma world site agree to disagree - in an agreeable manner.

Please go on you tube to see the shell premium gas independent lab tests a well as the tests performed by shell engineers themselves. They claim and have proven themselves to be not only a top tier fuel but better than any other top tier fuel ( all who are quite good anyway at any octane ).

To summarize please take my word for it that I get 1 more mpg by using top tier premium gas. Remember " 87 octane or higher " in the owners manual.

Best of luck saving money by not changing fluids etc. I hope you have many more years and miles of savings.

Check out antifreeze recommendations due to its inherent brakedown qualities even today in today's modern vehicles. You will come to agree with me. But apologies not necessary but accepted.

    From your fellow Tacoma fan.

Why don't you track a few tanks and show him (us) that we're wrong? I've tracked every single fillup since I got my truck new (almost 20K miles). I've noticed absolutely no difference with premium fuel.

You lost me at non EO gas, what the hell is that?

Toyota's coolant interval is 10 years or 120,000, do whatever you want but preaching Toyota is all wrong is still BULLSHIT.

But you say you aren't even sure what Toyota says, have you looked?

Still averaging 21 after 8000+ miles (hand calculated). I have found the trucks mpg readout is correct or very close on each tank. Very different than my '16 Tundras readout which claimed it always got 1mpg more than it actually did.

Despite my high overall average, I've only had one tank of gas on a road trip (70mph) get the advertised 23mpg, and half of that tank was losing elevation with a tailwind.

I don't know where you got your maintenance information. I didn't see it in the owners manual maintenance section.

If you read and understood my first post you'd realize it was only my opinion and I was responding to another previous post where another owner posted what he felt was the best maintenance schedule he would personally use and like me it was just his opinion too.

Listen you can rant and rave and swear but do get your facts straight about what was posted and why and whether it was a personal opinion or posted as gospel truth information backed by facts.

My post regarding maintenance is my opinion only and what I plan to do when servicing my truck. You do whatever you want with yours

But second request. Be respectful. Disagree in an intelligent polite manner. Please. Thank you Dannyblues

PS I am interested in becoming enlightened so if you can tell me where you found the maintenance information that says to do your first coolant change at 125,000 miles I'd appreciate it. If it's already in my owners manual I guess I missed it. Thank you.

Gasoline with no ethanol added. It is available in some areas as pump gas in popular octane grades. Not here in Connecticut unfortunately.

It was suggested I search Google under Puregas for service station providers.

Ethanol forms moisture in the fuel system = rust etc. In fact I buy non ethanol gas with the proper two stroke additive already mixed into it by the quart at Home Depot for my yard equipment only. It's expensive in two stroke formulation

Ok that's yours. I just noticed as I've said that since new and now just under 12,000 miles I regularly get at least 1 more mpg than I got when I used a few tankfuls of non toptier regular. I really don't wish to go back to regular to test the mpg. It's an insignificant gain anyway. I use Shell nitro premium 93 not for the 1 mpg gain but for the superior detergent performance that's proven by independent engineers as well as Shell.

For that information about Shell nitro premium 93 you can google it. I found you tube videos about its results by independent engineers

I'm using an iPhone and don't know how to insert online sites with the http: etc and I suck with computers. I'm 67 and didn't grow up with that technology.
    Thanks for your post.

So mine is a '17 dcsb 4x2 trd sport, 3in lift, 285/55r20 tires, brand new vehicle (3 miles when purchased). On my first refill I was only averaging 15.2mpg. That's about 90% city. Any thoughts on this? Does the lift and tires drop off the mpg that much? Now of course I wanted to check acceleration the first week driving it, but nothing really excessive. Any feedback would be appreciated

Mine is stock, and getting in the 13 range with city mainly driving. I have found that if I press higher on the pedal may help some. I did this by looking at the electronic gauge displayed on the dash, but that's my simple test. Problem for me is I have a low pedal press with my toes area habit. Hope something comes up that helps. Got a heads up of a possible update needed, but won't know until I'm able to go to the dealer.
