I used to "collect call" all my buddies, or whoever with the last 4 of the phone number as my name and wait for the call back when they declined the call .

Also did a bit of 3rd party billing before getting my hands on a dialer that had the coin sounds programmed into it. P1 was quarters, P2 was dimes, & P3 was nickels.

Might be what I'm missing.

All I have is 4wd vehicles (2 trucks and a Jeep) and a mom mobile (Highlander). I think my midlife, speed is calling. Maybe an MR-2, Miata, or an S2000.

Oh, no, not at all. Y'all were talking about things of old taking dimes and quarters and it made me think of when truck stop bathroom stalls used to cost a dime to use. Now and then you used to see that little ditty scrawled on the wall of a stall.

 

Mike, you shouldn't worry about stuff like that here! Anybody gets their little feelings hurt on this forum (especially this thread) needs to take their sensitive little ass to the corner then come back when they're ready to play with the adults again.

How did that work?

 

Back then (and still today), 3rd party billing you could charge a call to any number by knowing what to push on the dial pad (or do it by operator) and the 3rd party wouldn't be the wiser until the bill came. Phone company got smarter and started requiring people to accept the 3rd party billing but a lot of people still blindly accepted like they do with collect calls.

A pay phone makes a specific sound into the receiver depending on what coin you put in it. The dialer could be programmed to mimic the coin sounds so whenever you pick up the receiver, you put the dialer to the mouthpiece and "deposit your coins" (i.e. Press P1 four times with the dialer to the mouthpiece and the pay phone thinks you just inserted $1).
