New Gun?

Ok I'm looking to get a handgun. I really dont have any experience with guns other than my 12 gauge. I want something that is reliable and fairly cheap for me to shoot. Preferable bigger than a 22. Any suggestions?

 

I bought a Taurus PT24/7 Pro 40 caliber for my first handgun. Yes it is a big gun. But, I have had some training. Great gun a little cheaper than a glock and a step up from some others, it comes in 9mm, 40 caliber and 45. I recomend going to a gun range if you have one by you and renting some different guns and find what feels good for you. And definitely take some training.

 

U wanting it for conceal carry or just to have around?

 

Just to have around, so it doesn't have to be small or anything.

 

Thanks, I looked online at your suggestion and that seems to be what I'm leaning towards. Semi auto maybe 9mm or something. I want something that is going to last, isn't going to cost me an arm and a leg to shoot or buy. What are good brands that will last? I think I will probably have this forever!

Id get a springfield xd 9mm or .40 they are great guns with an excellent rep

 

Glock, Sigsauer, Taurus, Take care of any gun and you will have it forever. Well almost. There are some cheap guns out there. I love my Taurus for what I paid for it.

 

x2...I have the xd 9mm. Great gun! And if you have kids (or will in the future) it has a two-stage safety: (1) Trigger safety; and, (2) grip safety.

 

Bersa .380? There are just so many different options to choose from. I really dont even know where to being. I know I want a semi-auto and bigger than a 22.

 

Or if you got some loot a Kimber 1911. I want one bad, but keep spending the money on AR's.

 

Not being a dick but whats so good about that gun? I'm kind of gun illiterate.

I'd get a Smith and Wesson 686 6" 357.

Why?

Practical
686 is the stainless model, and stainless has less rusting issues if at all.
Just "some" of the ammunition choices: 38 special, 38+p, 357 mag, Shot shell load, can be found on any ammo shelf, and affordable.
Self defense, hunting, target shooting capable.
No worries of ammo malfunction
Easier to learn on
Double action or single action
Multiple choices on grip sizes available

The list goes on...

Auto's are great, don't get me wrong. But for what you are asking for, personally I think you'd be better served with a handgun such as this.

Either way, as said before. Go to an indoor range, and rent what appeals to you and put a few rounds through it. That way when it comes to putting down your hard earned cash, you get something that you already know you like to shoot.

Plus, if you never have had any formal handgun training. Most indoor ranges offer classes on the proper handling of handguns, and that should be high on your list of things to do in your quest to find a handgun that suits your needs.

Thanks for the information. I'm not really to sure what I'm going to do. I do plan on going to the gun range and renting one and seeing what I like the best. I would have never thought of that before someone mentioned it.

 

I'm glad somebody else recommended a wheel gun. A 357 is great as a starter gun, you can get some ultra light cowboy load 38's and shoot until you feel comfortable, then move up to power scale. Taurus and Ruger both make some good revolvers that are less expensive than a Smith.

Look at XDs, Glocks, M&Ps...Touch and feel all of them for comfort. Go to a range if you can and rent as many as you can. This is the best way to choose. Try to go no lower than 9mm.

 

Get a 9mm Glock. The ammo is cheaper and easier to get, and you can shoot any ammo through it.

 

Thanks guys for all the info... it hasn't really narrowed it down but I now know some of my options.

 

They can't shoot everthing. Glocks have polygonal rifling so shooting lead bullets is a no no.
