its the cruise control bulb in the dash has burned out, when you engage the cruise control the illumination of the light completes a circuit and then engages the cruise. when the bulb is burned out the circuit is not complete and wont engage, this happened to my truck and drove me crazy. you have to remove the dash to get to replace the bulb not that hard

I used a Camry or Lexus youtube video. There are two part #s for the clock spring in 07 Tacos. Mine used same part # as wife's ES350. Quickly found a Lexus or Camry video that helped out.

One part number is for trucks with steering wheel controls, one is without

It's possible but a bad clock spring is a much more common issue.

I looked into that with mine too, what happened to me was the dash and climate control bulbsstarted to burn out at 200k miles so I replaced them and when I re assembled my dash the cruise stopped working?? the light wouldn't illuminate and cruise not engaging, so I re tore the dash apart and pulled the cruise bulb it was black and burned out(lucky me) replaced it and the cruise worked with a green dash light good as new.doesnt hurt to look at it before going into a clock spring.

@TheCookieMonster A clock spring appears much easier to replace! Probably took me 20 minutes.

I believe the recall only covered models without steering wheel controls. Double check though.

This is possible, mine doesn't have the wheel controls.

Not sure on what years it covered. But 2005 was one of them.

My truck doesn't have any controls on the actual steering wheel itself. Don't know if the cruise control would be considered a steering wheel control, the controls are not buttons on the steering wheel.

That's strange because the clock spring recalls I've heard about have all been 2009+. I will dig into this and see if mine counts too.

Edit. Checked with the VIN, no outstanding recalls for this vehicle :(

I'm going to have to bring it up with them on TH when I take my truck.

Based on you guys' responses, people have had theirs replaced on recall and the model years were before 2009.

Some people state that Toyota seemed to have taken certain recalls off the site/system. Can't recall the details, but there was a thread about it somewhere on this site.

When I bought my 06DCSB OR, the cruise didn't work, and the dealer gave me a bit of a run around about getting it fixed until I took one of the tabletop displays listing the 100+ things that are supposed to be checked on a certified used Toyota, and pointed to the line that said "Cruise Control Operation checked" They fixed it, and told me it a was a loose connector in the wiring somewhere. nothing in the steering column, I think it was something to do with the transmission speed sensor(?).

    UPDATE:

Dealership told me the clock spring had been replaced by recall back in 2013, I had forgotten.

I know the clockspring is cheap, any idea how much the cruise control switch is?

    Thanks

if you can get the part number from the dealer or the switch itself you can run a search online for the best prices.seems like Camelback Toyota has the best prices on OEM parts.
