Well I couldn't be more disappointed. Been smelling burning coolant for the last couple of weeks, watching the coolant level drop on the reservoir but couldn't find any leaks on any hoses. Today however, after taking off the under carriage shield and shining a light up, a leak seems visible at the gasket on the passenger side of the engine, as seen in the pic. After reading all afternoon about the others and many problems with this engine AND a redesigned head gasket in mid 2006, how in the hell is this not considered to be a manufacturing problem and a recall in place. There's only 147,000km <100,000 miles on the truck, never been overheated since I've had it and has been gently used. I had a 91' V6 pick up that the engine blew up at 101,000km and Toyota paid the bill for a new engine, that sold me for life. I've had other Toyota pick ups, a Camry wagon, and currently a Matrix, Sequioa and this 06 Tacoma. I by them for quality but this head gasket problem is lookin like a real sore, that is festering big time. I'll have the dealer look at it, but the service guy I showed this picture to today, said he has never had to do one. Hard to believe when you see all the people with this engine, and leaking at #6. Anybody know the 1-800 # to call to report this issue?

Your lucky most happen between 125,000 and 145,000. At least you got an extra 2,000 miles :) J/J with you! Trust me I know it sucks! Been through it TWICE now on my 2006, going to court! Please call Toyota and make a complaint, better yet do it online because they document everything for you!

Whatever you do, if you get it fixed DO NOT let them machine your heads! Your timing will be slightly off forever or until you end up in court :)

lol, in fact when i was hanging out at another dealership's shop the other day, (a dealership that is trying to actually help me out dealing with the one that screwed me) I mentioned to a tech how all 2005 and most early 2006 Tacoma's have defective head gaskets. He said no, there is no TSB and I have done tons of replacements over the 17 years I have been here, all have had over 100,000 miles? If it was defective they would fail early and all the time? I said they do fail all the time, but between 125,000 and 145,000 miles. They are week and the leaks are very minor. In fact, the dealership that did the work on my truck stated, and documented, that my trucks head gaskets were completely fine when i brought it in to have them changed. I INSISTED they were bad and since I was paying the bill, I wanted them changed. Once the heads were removed I was proved correct. Then, i told the tech, you have done tons of replacements over 17 years?? right? he said yes. How many 2nd gen were 2005's and 2006's that had between 125,000 and 145,000 miles? He looked it up... almost all of them :)

He learned something new :) kool guy!

Sorry to hear about your loss bro :(

How come people with waaayyyyyyyyyyyyy more miles on 2007-2015 Tacoma's almost never have this issue? Look it up! There is a specific issue on these. And Toyota recognized the problem and redesigned the head gasket!

I come from the Quality Control world but in pressure piping. If my work causes a leak, which inturn causes environmental catastrophe, or a plant burns down, or people die, the lawyers and authorities come after me and my company, even if it was 11 years ago as Drivesector says. Had I been knowingly been putting out a flawed product in my world...in my Life...and something leaked, I sure wish I could just shrug my shoulders, make my customers pay the bill and say "Shit happens", as Drivesector suggests. Instead, I'd be in jail.
Toyota's Quality Control obviously knew it had a bad product and has done just that on this issue, and this ain't a cheap fix.

If only everyone had the same adament attitude towards quality craftsmanship. If I half-ass my job, a 4 story complex could burn to the ground. I expect others to put the same care and attention to detail into what they do.

Thanks for giving your experience, there's plenty more on other forums. Mine's in Kilometers, so about 85,000 miles and other than this, the truck drives and feels brand new and is well maintained. Judging from your story and soooo many others, something stinks, and it's not just the burning coolant burning off on my block.
Best of luck in your court endeavours, maybe a miracle will happen and all will be covered.

Thanks bro :) I wish you the best with your issue as well :)

PLEASE file a complaint with Toyota. Most people just have it fixed and move on. The more people that complain the more proof we have.

Are we really comparing fire protection to failed head gasket that happened well outside of warranty and over a 100k?

It's almost like this is a forum to get other enthusiasts input?? Why's there always gotta be that ass hat that feels the need to shit on the guy.

I'd be pissed if my head gasket went that early too. Good luck buddy. Fight the fight.

Yes, because 2007 to 2015 Tacomas with incredibly high mileage on them fail at a rate of about 1 per 1000 or even 1 per 10,000 who knows, but it is not common! Tacomas made between late 2004 and late 2005 fail all the time!

If drywall made by a company that was manufactured between 2004 and late 2005 was sold and rated at 1 hr fire protection. House fires are rare. 11 years later a pattern was discovered. In most house fires when fatalities occurred the drywall was manufactured between 2004 and late 2005. But, every house that suffered a fire that had sheets of drywall manufactured by the same company made AFTER late 2005, EXACTLY at the time the manufacturer decided the internal composition of the drywall needed to be changed suffered no fatalities. The drywall made in 2004-late 2005 was tested and proved to fail in 20 mins instead of 1 hr, yet drywall made after late 2005 was tested and proved to fail in excess of 1 hr. Like stated above, someone would either suffer huge civil penalties or go to jail!

My Lexus with 3.0 V6 seized on the interstate at about 85MPH due to sludge recall issue. It is not fun! Could have killed someone! SO YES, it's as important!

The leak due to a lack of FIPG was the timing cover oil leak near the steering pump, not a head gasket. In case you weren't aware, FIPG is Form In Place Gasket, AKA RTV. Which is not, or at least never should be, used on a head gasket.
